For my Level 3 Geography class, we were given an assessment to evaluate and come up with a plan to deal with the "issue of overcrowding at Abel Tasman National Park". We're meant to only be able to do this in class, and we have 4 lessons to do like 8 written pages of work + research and stuff, its bulls***. Anyway. Has anyone actually been to Abel Tasman National Park (its at the top of the south island), and is it actually that crowded? Im sure all the resources are made up.
Overcrowding is a serious problem. I've walked the track 5 or 6 times, the first time in ~1993 and the last time around 2002. In 1993 it was possible to turn up at sites and be with ~20 other people in the huts. By 2002 you were at campsites with ~100 other tents.
Entry is free, the problem is not only associated with those who walk in. The Kayaking trade is booming, not to mention water taxis taking lots of people into the park. The problem with Abel Tasman park specifically is the geography of the area. Tides are big, however at high tide most bays have little to no beach. This means there are very few places to stay that are safe.

One of the info sheets i copied some info off says that last year there was over 1,824,000 visitors. Not sure if thats '10 or '9 because those sheets looked pretty old.
