Like the topic said, I'm looking for a PDA because I don't want to carry a laptop and a PDA will do all I want it to do anyway.
Just wondering if anyone can suggest a good model etc

Features I want / need:
  • Bluetooth
  • 802.11b
  • MSN Messenger (or equivalent)
  • IRC
  • MS Word or application capable of doing .doc files ;)
MMC cards would be a bonus too but not necessary. MP3 player and Video player would be nice too.
Any help greatly appreciated :) oh and a low low price would be wicked ;)

While the Nokia 770 is quite nifty, it's not available in New Zealand (yet). I had one here last week and will post a review very soon.

What kind of features you need on top of that? Synchronisation (email, calendar, contacts)? Browsing (CSS and Javascript compatible browser?)

Most PDAs this day are compatible with MMC and SD cards. The later are better - faster and cheaper than MMC.

Also, less and less PDAs are coming out without a phone function. So if you want a non-phone PDA you might be stuck with Palm or some HP models.

I'd suggest the Pocket PC - HPs are still available in the country and will fit what you have in your post, plus the ones I listed here. If you have previous experience with Palm, then you might appreciate the PDAs as well, although not much future if we rely on the stories about Palm license of Palm OS running out, Access/Palmsource developing a new Linux based OS that no one has released yet, etc...

Basically, it comes down to whether you prefer the Palm OS or Windows Mobile interface, nearly every PDA on the market has the features that you've specified, with the exception of an IRC client - but you can download one off the internet.

Personally, i'd recommend the Dell Axim x51v - it has a VGA screen too.

The best choice would be the Apache as it has all those features you want, the JasJar is far too expensive.

If you don't want a phone then you should be looking at a Dell Axim

I've actually been looking at the Dell Axim X51v (624Mhz)... Seems nice and the price is reasonable(ish) too
