Terrified of being overcharged.. but even Trademe dosn't sell the crosses im looking for.

Does the import fee cost upwards of $30? i tried lookin at customs but.. its all gibberish to me.

It's unlikely a US$7 item will attract any import fee.

I dont know what that is lol, i wouldnt have a clue how it all works to be honest.. everytime i look it up it confuses me, but i'll try look up USPS soon and see what it is.

USPS Mail is the same as sending something via NZ Post. Can't the sender just post it?

yea, they say I have to pay postage and other fees though, i dont mind postage fee but i dont know what other fees are, im guessing its paying them the import tax fee?

Probably packaging. They would have to tell you what's that. Import fees, if any, would be paid to NZ Customs, not to the sender.

Ebay sellers who post internationally are meant to include in their auctions a statement that you may be liable to import fees/duty, etc. This is an Ebay requirement that the statement is there so that buyers don't get caught out.

What you will have to pay the Ebay seller (via PayPal) will only be what the winning bid on the auction was, plus whatever shipping cost is being listed by the seller. With in the auction there will be a Shipping and Payments tab (it is to the right of the Description tab).

If the seller is offering shipping to New Zealand then it should show in the drop down list on that page. When you select New Zealand it will then show the shipping options and their costs to New Zealand.

These two items are all you will pay to the seller (almost certainly via PayPal). You will not be due any money to Ebay or anyone else in the USA.

Given the low value, you shouldn't attract any import fees, duty, tax or GST on the item when it arrives in New Zealand. It should just end up bring delivered directly to you.

I think it is rude/wrong that they consider the shipping costs in that total. But then, I guess some people fiddle the value & shipping costs to try and diddle the tax collectors when only the value is collected on...

They aren't always so specific. The last item I imported they only charged based on the item value - non-inclusive of the shipping cost. They were quite clear about doing it that way - and I got the distinctive impression that they 'felt sorry' for having to charge in the first place.

I can understand the GST charges - it bring's most items I import closer to the local price. However, the additional charges of $38 are a little excessive.

In most cases - if the item i'm importing would incur charges, I wouldn't bother importing. If the online store allows 'fiddling' with the declaration form - then I definitely import, as it becomes WAY cheaper.

Other things to be aware of; If you pay for the faster shipping options - don't expect that to make any difference when it arrives in NZ. They all go into the same queue - no matter if it's priority or not.
