Not sure exactly where to post this so feel free to move it if its in the wrong section.

I brought a printer from Warehouse Stationary a couple of nights ago on impulse for school (originally there just to buy an A4 visual dairy) and it sat in its box for a couple of days until I was bothered to set it up. Unpack everything and I felt something was missing. Ink was in. Power on. No usb...

Firstly I thought it was missing so I searched the flat looking for this damn thing, no avail. I never remembered seeing one in the box at all. So I looked on the exterior on the box for the contents, didn't say anything about a USB cable, then I spotted "Non USB..." in the corner of my eye (don't know why I spotted the French version first but that means No USB if you didn't figure it out already). Called Canon and asked why a desktop printer with no wireless functionality or direct USB input lacks the key cable which enables the printer to complete its primary task of printing from a computer. Apparently its standard for printers to not come with cables to connect to PC's, and has been so for the last 3 or so years. Very very annoying ><

Why did they suddenly do that? Did they just assume people would only use it as a photocopier? Because you can't scan or print anything without a USB cable so its sort of useless until you buy this cable. That's like selling an iPod without a USB cable, it still works, but its not usable for its primary purpose.

Most companies stop providing USB cables with hardware a number of years ago - certainly at least 3 or 4 years ago. Just the norm now to not get a USB cable - it's a bonus when there is one.

2 reasons - knocks a few cents off the cost to them, and they probably assumed that every household now has a pile of USB cables sitting in the corner.

Anyone want to buy a Parallel printer cable? :)
Got a few of them cos every printer came with one. When they stopped supplying USB ones I thought "About bloody time!"

I would say the vast majority of printers have not come with a cable for at least 15 years. I think Epson did for a while, and I believe Brother do still include a cable.

The reason? The sales line is "Well they'd only include a 1.5m cable and you may need a longer one, and then you've wasted a cable." I agree the real reason is more likely that a 20c cable times how ever many printers are sold each year = a big saving for the company! Actuaally I remember an article from years ago where PanAm worked out that by reducing the amount of olives served with a martini in first class from 2 to 1 would save them $2m per year.

I think the $2m Olive story is a vast exaggeration...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3073562/ns/business-us_business/t/how-cure-airlines-ills/#.T073RfXtMhU

Feb. 18, 2003 ? It?s impossible to talk about cutting airline costs without mentioning Bob Crandall, the firebrand former chief of American Airlines. And so, let us revive the olive story. Most notorious among Crandall?s legendary cost-cutting was his idea to remove an olive from each salad served to passengers. A tiny garnish would never be missed, the reasoning went, and savings amounted to at least $40,000 a year.

I think I remember a while back there was a report of someone using the CGA to get a free USB cable with a printer because without it it's not 'fit for purpose'.
So you could go back to WS and demand a USB cable :D

My 3-year-old HP came with one.

I would take it back. I think the sale of goods act states that it must be in a useable condition, without the cable it's not, it would also be like no ink coming with the printer.

We bought a HP C4385 about a year ago - it came with a USB cable. I am honestly surprised that yours didn't come with one, and judging by the posts before mine, that seems to be the norm now. News to me....

Me too. On the other hand, I'm not surprised, it's like how you never get an HDMI cable with anything anymore.

Last couple of printers I got did not come with a usb cable in the box, it's a PITA if you don't have one lying around, but when printers cost as much as ink refills they gotta cut the costs somewhere.

Still, they should include one.

I agree it's odd they don't include one - but any time I have noticed one with a printer in the last 10 years I have been surprised...

Last week I actually cleaned up my place and now have a box just for "USB cables'.... It's full.

Most HP and Brother printers still com with usb cables, Canon and Epson dont always come with one. This has been common practice for years now.
