Manufacture in New Zealand
Creme Eggs were manufactured in New Zealand at the Cadbury factory in Dunedin from 1983 to 2009. Recently Cadbury in New Zealand and Australia has gone through a restructuring process which has seen production of most Cadbury products previously produced in New Zealand now produced at Cadbury factories in Australia. The Dunedin plant has had a $69 Million upgrade to become a specialist factory, specialising in boxed products such as Cadbury Roses. The result of the changes means that Creme Eggs are no longer manufactured in New Zealand or Australia but instead imported from the United Kingdom. The change has also seen the range of Creme Eggs available for sale decreased.[2] The size also dropped from 40g to 39g in this time. The response from New Zealanders has not been positive. Complaints have included the filling not being as runny as the New Zealand version.[10] The result has also seen various Facebook groups started in protest to the changes.[11]

How unfortunate. Creme Eggs were one of the staples at Easter in my household. I think it's the actual chocolate I noticed. I don't know if I could properly describe it, but it's "off".

Yah I have had a couple where the middle wasn't runny, perhaps they boiled the egg too long.

The 'off' taste of the chocolate will be the same as when they moved the Dairy Milk blocks production to be Australia only - I always chose the packs that were made in NZ, but now there's no choice

Whittakers don't do "creme eggs" and yes Whittakers have nicer chocolate now.

We gave up even buying Creme eggs following the change, they just aren't the same any more.

I usually wait till after easter to buy creme eggs when they suddenly drop to about 1/2 price, however it is my wife that eats them.
We haven't bought Cadbury chocolate (slabs) since they decided to put palm oil in it, instead have stuck with Whittakers (esp the high % cocoa varieties). I'd love to see a graph of NZ Cadbury chocolate sales. Might make a nice example for a marketing text book.

It would be great if they did. You can add me to the list of people who used to love creme eggs, but has stopped buying them.

IMHO Whittakers have always had nicer chocolate than Cadbury. I think the creme eggs have gotten smaller as well...and having just read the link posted by scottjpalmer those thoughts seem well founded.

It's likely Whittakers can't manufacture such an item due to marketing rights (including the shape/concept, not just the name), which would explain why they haven't done so despite the overwhelming popularity of them.
