But it doesn't change the fact that their system is confusing to use. I keyed in $8.00 that day assuming 50c will be added to the total charge, but that was obviously not the case.

But you can't "key in" an $8 amount. The Cash Handling Systems UI is the same across every terminal in NZ - you select a time period, press OK, it then notifies you of the 50c fee and you press OK again.

You've only selected 90 mins parking which would have shown the expiry time, said a total of $7.50, and then notified you off the 50c surcharge. Had you pushed the right button once more after the $7.50 it would have shown a message saying maximum time limit reached and shown the $8 / 12 hour ticket period.

ajobbins: Don't know why they just don't put a barrier arm in and out of all their carparks - and you have to have a paid up validated ticket to exit (So you pay at the end rather than beginning).

This would mean that a) They always got the right amount of money for the time parked and b) they don't have to have 'enforemcent officers' on site anymore.

Suspect they have crunched the numbers and worked out that they can make more money by allowing people to overstay and 'fining' them than just forcing people to pay the right amount anyway.

Good thing about many of these systems too is that is allows you to enter and exit with just a credit card. That way you don't need a ticket, and they just charge the correct amount to your card when you exit. Simple, fast, effective.

the cost of installing barriers arms in every car park would likely be prohibitive.  a lot more than the cost of having a simple pay and display machine.

You reckon? I read that wellington airport are about to install a whole heap of new arms on their drop off point inramp, which will prevent people staying for longer than 5 minutes.
The thing about pay and display machines is that you have to have quite a lot of them. With post pay, you should be able to get away with less, as you can just have them near the exit. The problem with them though is that you can have holdups in the line where someone may have forgotten to pay before getting to the arm etc

Well if Fair Go take it on, they will probably test the process. I have only ever paid for mine using text, but can't remember exactly how the process worked, but can't recall any problem, and the time was on the ticket.

Isn't there a Mr Bean episode showing him trying to do this.. Some of the ones I have seen also have plates in the floor that go up, and would damage the underneath of a car if someone tried tailgating.

suspectTV: See all that other rubbish on the ticket... WOF Expires, Officer number, Distance from sign... etc..

They're trying to make it look legit... hilarious.. perhaps mention the words "Commerce Commission", "Fair Trading Act" and "Misleading" in your next letter.

Are they also 'fining' people if their WOF has expired?

I suspect this NZMCS crowd 'administers' infringement notices for all sorts of parking providers, possibly including councils who can fine for expired WOFs and rego, and use the same form template for all notices.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Dear Geeks,

Wow this discussion has taken off - clearly some of you don;t have enough to do on a Thursday afternoon!!!!

Consider this an official reply from the offending parking company (yes I work for the offending sods!!!):

When the original poster Shreyas) put his/her credit car in the slot, they were asked to push the 'more' button which shows what time you are paid until.  The time increase only went to 3.47pm and not 12 hours later because $8 is the cash price and the instructions clearly state that if you are paying by credit card, the transaction shall be 50c higher.  So pushing the 'more' button once more would have brought up 12 hours.

But the greater issue is that you appear to have simply made an honest mistake - and I agree I would feel aggrieved if I was in the same situation.  The aim of our breach system is to ensure there are always free car parking bays and to stop abuse (ie. people staying over, we resell the bay, and there's a car still there) - not to punish customers we are hoping to retain and actually enjoy our service.

So email me your breach number at info@tournament.co.nz and make it attention 'Chief Geek' and I'll ensure the entire breach waived for you - if you promise to be more careful next time!  We do hope to see you again and apologise for your inconvenience.

All the best

Wow, finally a reply that makes any sort of sense from a Tournament official!

Whilst I appreciate the 'fine' being waived, I still think that Tournament's parking systems need a tweak so it is more 'intuitive', regardless of what the instructions say.

As I've maintained all along, I was in a hurry that day and I simply pushed the button until I saw $8.00 on the screen and got the ticket (without checking the expiry time!). I have never had this problem at other car parks before as they automatically added the 50c transaction fee. To me, it just seems like Tournament is using it to maliciously extort money from honest customers. I am not the first to have been fined by Tournament this way.

I hope that this isn't a wind-up, as it is the first post from TournamentGeek.

If you do work for the company, then there was probably enough information in the scan of the Ticket Information to find the breach number.

My advise to the OP is to ensure you get a letter or email directly from Marcus at Tournament Parking stating the fee has been waived.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

Why anyone would want to 'pose' as a Tournament official is beyond me, so I think TournamentGeek is legit IMHO.

But yes, TournamentGeek if you are still reading this I'd like an official written confirmation that the fine has been waived.

Sounds legit, and don't know why anyone would pose as them. Shows the power of social media.

have no reason to think poster is anything other than what they say. Wasn't impressed with the opening remark about "nothing better to do" which kind of set me off on the wrong foot. I mean this is a forum so we discuss things and geekzone is more balanced than the majority I have seen.

Apart from that the explanation sounds plausible.

I think it was a slightly denigrating thing for them to say about people who have posted, and I felt the same as you about that statement. Especially as many posters saw both sides of the story, and weren't blaming the parking company.
