And someone invoked Godwin's Law. I should really just lock and ban the user because this is one of the very few FUG rules I like to enforce as it's unacceptable for me.

I will let this pass and chalk it to the "educational" column, but do not use it again.

And thats totally wrong in New Zealand. Uncalled for. WHat a terrible thing to shoot seals. The guy has been disgraced. Why? Because they protected animals.

As long as the animals are not protected, its OK to shoot them and even dress them up Cool Foot in Mouth Tongue Out

New Zealand schoolchildren encouraged to dress up DEAD animals in bizarre competition

Jeeves:
Rangi = Poor work/temporary/botch-up job. Eg: "That plaster work looks a bit rangi".

This is a highly-offensive racist slur. It seems the myth that Maori people do poor work/botch-up jobs sticks around in some circles.

I realise you probably didn't know the origin or meaning of the term Jeeves but, "rangi", just like, "hori" are words you should leave out of your vocabulary. Not a good idea to recommend them to newcomers to NZ.

Jesus Christ, perhaps you should untwist your knickers. This is not in the slightest bit racist.

Thanks for the polite come-back. My knickers aren't twisted but your opinion that the phrase is "not the slightest bit racist" could only be true if the origin, that Maori do poor work/botch-up jobs/creatively-fouled up DIY because they are too lazy to do otherwise, was fact. It's not and it is insulting. The people who started this about 10 years ago thought it was funny to use the name of the pre-eminent Maori god to slag off the supposed-laziness of Maori people. The people who continue to use it are probably just ignorant.

blakamin:They actually look better than most NZ roads... unless you're in Auckland.

You guys have broader roads than us. The roads I have driven on (from Hamilton and down to Wellington a few different routes) have been of good quality (with some roadwork and gravel roads here and there).

So yeah, nah. :)

I think the roads are similar but Norway spends more on reading infrastructure such as tunnels.

The main thing I noticed about driving in NZ after returning from overseas was that there are a large number of bad drivers when out on the open road. Too impatient and aggressive. So, drive defensively.

Words often mean more than one thing. If you feel that 'rangi' is highly offensive then you are in the minority here in NZ. I see no evidence that the term is offensive, only your assertion that it is so.

A lot or racism is based on ignorance and I would certainly say that is the case here for those that are trying to defend the use of the term Rangi with its negative connotation. I don't know how anybody could defend its use in this situation because it certainly fits all the criteria to be termed a racist reference.

Feel free to enlighten me, simply claiming that a word and its connotation for bad execution (which was never solely applied to Maori) is racist seems to reach.

Jeeves:
Rangi = Poor work/temporary/botch-up job. Eg: "That plaster work looks a bit rangi".

Note that the original quote does not mention this term applying specifically to the Maori people but instead to shoddily done work, regardless or race.

Important note: the term 'bastard' is part of the English language. This does not mean all Englishmen are bastards any more than using a Maori word means it applies to all Maori.

Please, explain to me how the term 'rangi', when used to refer to haphazardly completed tasks, is racist?

Has it been used in the past in a racist manner? Probably.

Does that make its usage when referring to poorly completed work racist? No.

I am perfectly aware of the past usage of the term and those who have misused it. My usage and defense is hardly ignorant. This is how language evolves and this has been the case since language first existed.

I find the people jumping on the PC brigade wagon about issues like this more often than not enable the issue. Who cares that some fool misused a term 30 years ago? The word is part of our culture now, does not refer to one particular race, and is most certainly not a racist slur.

are you seriously suggesting just because a race based derogatory term is part of our culture it makes it ok? Or as I think is more accurate you are trolling or worse.

This, which was up for years but removed from the Urban Dictionary last year:

The fact that Urban Dictionary actually removed it should tell you something.

This: http://surfersmag.mpora.de/video/rangi-ormond-loves-terror.html
(look at the first paragraph, which is in English)

Does this enlighten you enough?

I'm seriously not posting anything more on this topic. It sickens and disgusts me. It it also hijacking a good thread about do's and dont's in NZ which, I am certain, has given the OP plenty to think about before making New Zealand his home.
