My favourite bbq was about 10 years ago when i was young in hokitika. Me and my family and a bunch of cousins that i had never meet before from aussie. Big family event with a lot of food. Especially chicken kebabs.
A year or so ago, I had the occasion to try to help a friend set up her new portable BBQ. It was a small one with, naturally a smaller than standard connection. After getting it all set up we found that getting the small gas bottle that came with it filled to be nigh on impossible with most places telling us they only filled the standard larger bottles.
Finally another one of our group was able to get that sorted and we were ready to go. Next step was to light the BBQ. Oh Dear, Nobody smoked, no lighters or matches so off I went to get that sorted. Returning with a suitable long necked lighter from a shop, l lit the BBQ and we were ready to start cooking the food. All went well until, having been distracted watching some ducklings with their mother, of course the steaks were well overdone with more than one resembling charcoal rather than a yummy steak. As we had only allowed one steak per person, guess who got to eat a couple of sausages instead. I doubt we would have qualified as the "Be Prepared" type. Still finally managed a great time with friends, good food, coleslaw, potato salad and some eggs to go with the meats all accompanied by great music and a few drinks.
Best BBQ story was a few years ago (in 2014) just before Christmas we had just moved into our new home in Rolleston from Aranui (Christchurch)
We hadn't had a chance to settle in when one of our close friends invited us around for dinner, not expecting a BBQ waiting for us with a few of our other close friends.
It was a really nice gesture, to have good food, good company and good wine after a long slog of moving over a week.
Best BBQ story the competition stated. Be creative it said.....
Well in all honesty, I can't remember the last BBQ I went to it, let alone had, it was that long ago. I've got my brothers old round gas BBQ sitting sadly in my garden shed, quietly rusting away and slowly dying from neglect. As everyone knows, BBQ-ing is what Kiwi menfolk do, it's not a recognised sport for single, middle aged Kiwi women. Which is a shame as I have the most perfect backyard, with a jaw dropping view, to hold one of these hallowed food festivals in.

Maybe the competition winner would like to come rescue and resuscitate my antique BBQ machine, fan new flames into its forlorn belly and give it a reason to 'live' again. If it was able to be revived, they could snap glorious full colour HDR photos of their prowess on their sleek and shiny new phone..... couldn't upload them to Geekzone to show off though, there's STILL next to no cell phone coverage in my little slice of paradise.
Beautifully done smoked Trout on the BBQ - freshly caught that day.
They say it's not the best tasting fish - but smoked up with some herbs - it was pretty good!

Best BBQ is usually the last one. This was breakfast this morning:

This big hot plate gets a lot of use in our house.
Two huge pieces of sirloin cutting steaks off one at a time until none of us could eat another bite. Makes me hungry just thinking about it.
The best BBQs have always been the ones where the whole family gets together usually around Christmas or New Year's day. Nothing beats having the family all together for a good feed.
Oh no, not another end of the world prediction
Hard to choose just one, but many years ago after spending a few weeks travelling around Eastern Europe myself and a couple of friends were sorely in need of some recovery time, so decided to head to Portugal and ended up in a small seaside town somewhere near(ish) to Porto... It was so long ago that I've clean forgotten the name of the town, really wish I could remember! We spent all day every day on the beach and for evening meals found a local restaurant that did Portuguese style chicken over big charcoal bbqs. It was amazing.
Sadly my ipod (gen3 I think lol) at the time with all the photos on it was stolen during the travels. But it was all cooked something like the photo below...

I always remember the Guy Fawkes BBQs that we used to have when I was young. Dad used to pull the rear-mounted loader bucket off the tractor, stretch some chicken wire across the top and light a fire in it. Authentic rustic smoky BBQ and plenty of space to cook all the snarlers at once.
most memorable bbq was the one where I nearly set the house on fire. I liked to BBQ but hated the cleaning part and it seemed I had neglected to clean the collection tray at the bottom and there was quite a build up of fat and other goodies on it. Turns out if that gets bad enough it can catch on fire, which it did the next time I was cooking. I turned the BBQ on and went back inside to get all the meat to cook, came back out and flames were coming out the back and starting to scorch the side of the house. Turned it off quick smart and dragged it out to the middle of the deck. I reckon another minute and the house would have been on fire. Needless to say, these days I clean the BBQ a bit better than I used to.

My favourite BBQ was at Waitawa Regional Park, Spent the day swimming and fishing with the kids, then a few hours on the Mountain Bike trails around the place.
The kids had a blast, wife was chilled, new puppy was happy. and I had a blast. Didn't leave till it was starting to get dark and the kids gets were getting tired.
