I didnt read it either, I skimmed it, and when I see sensationalism, credibility has ended

I dont expect modern news readers to read the news as they did 50 years ago, but I don't expect entertainment when I watch the news.

At the beginning of the article it has in bold type "opinion" It is not a news item.

With freedom of speech and the Press  comes the good the bad and the ugly. If we are only going to allow a perceived good then we are dispensing with freedom of speech and the Press. One just has to exercise ones right not to view, listen or read the stuff one deems as bad.

That is what is happening. They have been making more and more low-value tabloid style pieces. Viewers have been exercising the option to not view it, so their ratings drop and the price they can sell their advertising for drops. Leading to making even more low-value pieces and so on until they aren't a viable business anymore. At which point they complain how unfair it is that TVNZ isn't paying the government a dividend.

It wouldn't rate it as an opinion piece. Kardashians arent either. Your making it very easy for any attention seeking loudmouth shenanigans to be thrown into the news mix and be part of the overall news coverage

So who will be the arbiter of whose opinion is allowed and whose opinion is not?  Remember you don't have to agree with the premise of an opinion for it to be an opinion.

LOL, I remember at high school I answered a question "In your opinion what did the author mean by this..." , I was marked wrong, argued with my English teacher I could NOT be wrong, he asked for my opinion, he got my opinion and therefore it must be right.

Got thrown out of class.

Its not about agreeing or disagreeing. That's why its termed an opinion.  If this guy ranting and being loud and brash or Richardson, they are just being loud and brash as that's their thing, its stardom, my name in lights, keeping myself relevant, attention seeking. The issue there is that the price becomes irrelevant, its just a tool for an actor to act for. Infotainment. Its a new low. So continue TV3, and goodbye when you fold.

opinion as a noun = a view or judgement formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. In the case of the Vegan piece TV3, Newshub, the presenter or whom ever are not stating a fact. They are as they have highlighted stating an opinion. The reader, viewer or listener can take from that what they want. They can like or hate it that does not alter that the article is an opinion piece. For a piece to be and opinion it does not need to be liked , disliked, right or wrong, good or bad it is just an opinion.

One of the reasons I like Australian news and consider it relevant to me as a Kiwi, is that it is serious and tries to inform, not entertain. I am talking about the public service news, of course, on ABC and SBS. This is generally of a much higher standard and quality than anything we get here. I particularly enjoy the Drum, which discusses current events in an intelligent and thoughtful manner and does not (thank goodness) try to be 'infotainment', though it can also be entertaining.

Fair enough, but that still doesn't entice me to want to see Australian news. New Zealand news - in the manner you describe - now that might pique my interest. More than some item on something happening in the middle of the Outback anyway (for example), as that doesn't really affect me or my life.

As expected.

Context is the key to whether you are right or wrong.

It is not correct that you must be right because the context is that this is an assessment of your response as a scholar. The teacher is assessing your understanding of the topic. There is a standard that you are being assessed against and, in this case, your opinion was assessed as failing to meet the required standard.

You would be right if your opinion is expressed in general conversation in which case there is no standard that your opinion is measured against.

I can't think of a compelling reason why fact and opinion should not be or cannot be assessed in the same manner. It is normal and rational to assess any information in a similar manner, e.g. Fact, Fiction, or Opinion? Evaluating Online Information

An opinion piece label is used to express various things:

  • that the content is more opinion than fact
  • that the content is less authoritative because the writer does not have sufficient expertise to be called an authority on the topic
  • that the content is an editorial which is an opinion piece purporting to represent the position of the organisation or owner

It is disingenuous to require "opinion" label to merit a less stringent level of assessment.

While facts and opinions are different, all news reporting represents a mix of these - plus other features such as accuracy, fiction, values, etc.

News organisations know that an opinion is just as much news as any facts. Any opinion can, when it is reported, become news. Just as any opinion can also become a fact.
