Justice at last seen to be done.

JaseNZ:
I am just sick of the double standards that are in our justice system.
While I agree, I think they're here to stay - they're intertwined throughout all of our social and justice systems
networkn:
I'd equate it to kids who go hungry because of the parents bad choices, you still feed them, regardless of the cost, because, you can't make a kid responsible for the parents actions. It may not be 100% "fair" but it's not about that.
The relatives probably paid no part in, had no knowledge of the crimes. Someone who does this probably isn't thinking clearly and isn't thinking through the consequences to anyone but themselves, and even then, barely that, as murdering someone gets you put behind bars for a long time.
Naming him won't serve additional justice, won't bring her back and won't shorten his sentence. It won't ease the families pain.
Well actually it might have - turns out he's a serial offender. I suspect other women may come forward now and say they were treated by him in a similar way.
So...slightly off-topic, but does anyone know why sentences are served concurrently instead of consecutively in NZ?
In parts of the US it appears you can be sentenced for each victim and each crime individually and end up with a sentence of 900+ years.
Here, we seem to think that the lifetime suffering of victims and their kin is measured in 10-20 year stretches. No matter how many victims. No matter how bad the crime.
Except of course for the ChCh mass-killer.

It's not 17 years - it's a 'life' sentence without the possibility for parole for a minimum period of 17 years.
He's not getting out after 17 years and one day - that's the earliest he can be paroled.
GV27:Serious question (I don't know the answer): How many people in NZ have served more than 17-20 years in prison since the 1960's?

David Bain came kind of close at 13 years, but obviously there were some issues with the prosecution there

And then he's not just "let out", he's on Life Parole.
The prisoner first has to convince the Parole Board that he's safe to be released: in this case not before he's served seventeen years
Life Parole can have whatever conditions the Parole Board considers suitable
Someone on Life Parole can be recalled to prison for breaching their Parole conditions, and would have to go through another Parole Board cycle to be released again
"lifers" are never just let out of prison

William Dwane Bell was convicted in 2003 of the Parnell RSA murders committed in 2001.
He is serving a life sentence with a thirty year non-parole period
Including time on remand, he must have already served close to twenty years

One hopes so. Everyone is entitled to their day in court. He has had his. When the time comes, I hope he is denied parole. 17 years is not nearly long enough to protect against this kind of trash.
