clevedon:Maybe us born and bred in NZ (or call us Kiwi's if you like) much prefer our native species, which are also part of our culture to introduced pests and are very interested in keeping it that way. And some people from not around here, don't.

At least Xenophobia is alive and well, that's one thing that'll never be eradicated in NZ

Make sure they're natives! There are far too many Tui out there destroying our native plants.

Of course, they make entirely too much noise, and they are so agressive to the introduced species that i have no pity for them.

ajobbins: Let me expand:

While he may have somewhat of a point, and I don't deny that domestic cats will be responsible for the death of some native birds, I would like to see some solid evidence showing that domestic cats are solely responsible for declining numbers of native birds, that eradicating them would reverse this and that their eradication would have other negative effects on other pests (like an increase in rodents).

DOC for example acknowledge that dogs, ferrets and stoats each kill far more kiwi than cats do, yet GM is not calling for the eradication of any of those.

Actually  (heh heh heh) Maori are responsible for the eradication of more native flora and fauna than any other species in this country - pakeha included. They introduced the rat and dog and were responsible for vast changes to a virgin environment including burn offs that significantly changed the eco system. The moa, giant hawk / eagle and quite a number of other species disappeared under their watch .. which had significant impact on other animals and floara down the change.

Maybe GM is quietly using cats as the sharp end of the wedge to get rid of maori, land claims etc so he can get their land and develop it ....
