Finally received my citizenship certificate in the post today! Only a week or so after the ceremony was meant to happen (and just under 12 months from submitting).

While its great moment for me Im totally staggered that they are pushing out processing even further now - it really is a bad look.

Congrats. What a fantastic moment for you and your family.

It's a pity about the negative parts, but the end result seems good :)

Congrats, it must be a good feeling becoming an official Kiwi.

This has been added to the DIA Website.

https://www.govt.nz/browse/passports-citizenship-and-identity/nz-citizenship/how-to-apply-for-nz-citizenship/application-timeframes/

So up to 16 months is the expected norm.  Pathetic!!

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Timeframe seems ridiculous for essentially ticking a box that you have been here long enough. Out of interest, do they require the full payment up front at the time of applying?

It's something I should get around to eventually but haven't really had a need - born in UK and family moved here in 1993 when I was 7 so just have permanent residency and have never come into a situation where NZ citizenship has been needed. Have worked in various government departments and only PR was needed. My parents have never bothered either, only my brother has as he moved overseas a couple of years ago so got it so he can easily come back whenever. Obviously not anticipating the current situation where you can't really come back!

Agree it should be a box ticking exercise. Funny how they say it can be delayed by other govt departments when I would expect it should be relatively easy to check criminal records etc.

I was in a similar situation as you, UK passport with permanent residence for 22 years.

I have found over the past 5 or so years it has become a bit of an issue travelling back to NZ. Not with entering NZ but leaving other countries back to NZ or transiting. For example on my last trip back from the US I had to obtain a visa for transiting via Sydney simply because I would be in transit for more than 8 hours. Simple enough to get (its like an ESTA) but it caused problems leaving the US (the rest of my family has NZ citizenship). This was not something that was required say 10 years ago - UK passport would just get a visa on arrival. Ive also had the occasional problem leaving the US and having to explain that I live there and have permananet residency (due to the flight being one way, even though it was the return leg).

I also think things like this are not going to get easier in the future given the current border closures etc. This is why the first lockdown prompted me to finally apply.

For me 4yrs ago it seemed like a box ticking exercise with exception of providing some speed ticket details (which ended up being not applicable) and consent from an in-absentia child parent in UK to wait for approving/ignoring. That part seemed to be the only delay, was difficult getting a UK police check so persuaded DIA to have permission from me to contact NZ Immigration to view the original police check report (why they don't do that by default is stupid).   Think it took about 5 months altogether.

Interesting. Have been to Australia plenty of times so just had to get the visa, but haven't had the transit issue. Had a similar thing leaving the US though - my wife and I did a trip in 2019 and on departing New York the self check in kiosk didn't seem to like my non NZ passport given the one way flight so had to go to the desk instead. Didn't have the transit issue though - in fact given the size of Sydney Airport, by the time we had walked to the international transit area, been through security and had our bags randomly re-checked 3 times, we almost had to run to the next flight.

You're probably right though. Should get onto it while I don't need it in any hurry.

Awesome news. That was rather quick! Hopefully they've decided to get on top of things.

Congrats, quick considering these new timelines.
May I ask if you applied online or submitted your documents directly?
