I have some concerns about the building that Centre Port own on the reclaim land. Centre Port is 100% owned by Wellington City Council who do the compliance. Not a conspiracy theorists but is it wise to have self governance in these situations?

MikeB4: Another building on the corner of Taranaki and Manners streets is in trouble. Low risk of collapse but "cracking" sounds coming from it.

I worked in NEC House until very recently. The building is comprised of three separate structures joined together, and I assume that the current situation will be the same as after the 2013 earthquakes when the seismic joints came apart leaving significant internal damage but no structural issues. After the 2013 earthquakes there was a detailed seismic assessment undertaken by the building owner and as far as I recall the only issue identified was the design of the scissor stairs which has since been rectified. 

I would strongly doubt that the building poses any significant threat to public safety at the moment, but it won't be able to be occupied for a while. 

Possibly not wise to have self-governance, but I'm guessing that engineering design for buildings on liquefaction prone land may have changed significantly since the Chch quakes.  They knew Chch was at risk, but I think the modelling was wrong with regard to shaking conditions that would cause problems.  A full-size real event to test theory - which was mainly based on pages of calculations and small-scale tests with tubs of mud on a shaking table - can throw up unexpected results.

Our apartment is reasonably high up in the SoHo building.  The building is design to sway in quake and it has.  There is non-structural cladding damage (plasterboard, mortar etc) and all the cupboards and drawers emptied onto the tiles. Lost a few plates and glasses and the TV came off it's a cabinet and the display has partially failed. 

I'm renting the apartment furnished.

I was thinking last week, I would really like to secure that TV and cabinet, but that means drilling holes which I'm not supposed to do.

We are pleased to advise 2degrees mobile voice and sms service has largely been restored.  Please note coverage in quake impacted zones in Kaikoura and surrounding regional sites at Ward, Hundalee and Waiau is not at full capacity. Our techs continue to work to restore mobile data services in impacted areas.

 

2degrees Broadband/fixed line:

 

Good progress to restore broadband and fixed line services is being made with our network partner Chorus.  In the interim, and as has been the case since the quake, people in Kaikoura can make use of the 2degrees/Canterbury District Health Board enabled wi-fi at the hospital.  This is currently the only wi-fi access available in the area and is powered by a wireless backhaul link to Christchurch.

 

2degrees stores:

 

The majority of 2degrees stores are open.  Our Queensgate Mall store in Lower Hutt will be closed for the rest of the week.  Blenheim is also closed pending a structural assessment.

 

2degrees is very happy with the progress that has been made to restore mobile services and our ability to assist people in Kaikoura through the wi-fi option at the hospital.  We are optimistic about restoring fixed line and broadband services in Kaikoura in the short term and continue to work with our network partners on this.

 

I just heard on the 11am news that the defence headquarters building which was only built four years ago and designed to withstand "anything" (I'm typing this from memory) has damage and may not be usable for a year.

WTF is going on? Having our seat of government in Wellington is inherently risky.

That is shocking. Has the royal commission enquiry on the chch earthquake concluded yet? might want to add wellington into it!

I seem to remember one of the lessons learned from Chch (or perhaps rediscovered) is building on reclaimed land or building on land that was once swamps means that if certain kinds of earthquakes strike, the moving/shaking effect on structures is amplified. Something like that, I'm no engineer.

As for Tuesday's floods closing major roads into Wellington, I think money needs to be spent to improve the reliability of those routes by such things as: benching hillsides back away from the roads, improving drainage so one side of the frigging motorway doesn't look like a swimming pool next to the concrete median barrier.

I had actually wondered how internet is linked between Dunedin and the rest of the world.

The map suggests 2 lines one up the east coast (Now damaged??) one up the west coast (hanging by a thread??) to take us to Auckland before the wires then take us to the US.

Would that be right?
