A small question that has apparently been making the rounds on the Internet is whether a woman would rather encounter a bear or a random man in the woods. What is causing an uproar (at least among men) is that nearly all women say they would prefer to take their chances with the bear. This seems sensible to me. I wonder how it would poll on Geekzone. What does everyone think? Man or bear?

Random man.

You can’t sweet talk your way out of a situation with a bear.

There's a good chance the man has gone bush to get away from the little woman at home and hardly wants a conversation with another one.

If he’s in the forest he has a purpose and it’s not meeting a woman because we are always too cold to hang around the woods.

I reckon the majority of men would be protective and friendly in such a situation.

The bear will just be hungry, grumpy and very large.

I don’t like all the man bashing kids are taught just because you get a few rotten ones. There are a lot of very rotten women too.

Totally agree. I think it's a loaded and dog-whistle question - quite sexist and unfair to men. The 'bear' answer implies an assumption that, in the woods situation, all men are going be malevolent towards the woman and try to take advantage of her. That's simply untrue imo.

In order of danger it would be bear, somebody you knew and the random stranger least likely. The police look at partners,friends and family first if no bears are involved.

Haven't seen this one "around the Internet" so far, but it seems like anyone preferring to encounter a bear is probably struggling with the assessment of risk associated with rare events. It is well-known that humans struggle with interpreting the probability of a rare event occurring, and that after some threshold all tail end risks are treated the same.

Haven't seen this one "around the Internet" so far, but it seems like anyone preferring to encounter a bear is probably struggling with the assessment of risk associated with rare events. It is well-known that humans struggle with interpreting the probability of a rare event occurring, and that after some threshold all tail end risks are treated the same.

It's not Americans in general (although they may be particularly bad here), people in general are incredibly bad at assessing risk, and worry about ridiculously unlikely things while ignoring far more common risks. So this is just another of many, many, many examples of getting risk assessment wrong, and it happens all the time. Here's one good article on it, although coloured by when it was written, post-911. Here's what's probably a more readable form.

There are of course a lot of unspecified what ifs to this question. Is the bear being aggressive or just standing there? Does it have cubs? Is the man behaving erratically? Does he speak or respond to words in a reassuring manner? And so forth.

My heart leans to the bear but my head says the man is the lesser risk. I know what my head says to be true. The overwhelming majority of humans, both male and female, are decent, caring people who just want to help. Bears are an unknown proposition, unless one happens to be a bear expert. But then my heart cries 'why is that man out here in the woods all by himself?'

For some unfathomable reason, my ignorance of bears and serial killers persuades me that the bear is the lesser risk unless it is charging me. I guess I just feel that I am smarter than the average bear.

Likely yes, but ensure the motherboard explicitly states it supports M.2 NVME and/or PCIe. Some early boards only had SATA support.
