You can still use the phone until cards expire. You can't add new cards though.

BNZ have just sent out an email. They advise that you can only use the currently loaded cards until mid-late August.

And the Semble FAQ says until card expire.

I've just seen the emails from both Semble and BNZ (nothing from Snapper yet but I'm sure it will be coming).

The BNZ email says you can continue using cards loaded into the Semble app until 15 August when they "will progressively be removed". BNZ don't have their own wallet/payment app (yet - the email says they "will soon be announcing [their] exciting new mobile payment application"). Announcing. Not releasing. Hopefully there won't be too much of a gap between cards being removed from Semble and available in a BNZ app.

That said, I didn't really use Semble as often as I could have, but it has come in very handy on occaision so I will be sorry to see it go. Those times I went to a cafe and their paywave terminal was actually working. Or stopping at the supermarket on the way home from the gym and realising I didn't have my wallet with me.

I probably used Snapper in Semble the most, for busses and the cable car. Will Snapper update their app so we can use it to make payments, rather than just check balances and top up?

And the Semble FAQ says until card expire.

The Semble FAQs also say: "your cards will remain in your Semble wallet for the time being. Your card provider...controls how long your cards can be used or where" and later "it is expected your payment cards will not work after the 25th August 2016".

I used contactless payments via phone wherever possible - even in Australia. BNZ not having an alternative while ASB, ANZ and other have is a shame.

Sad to see Semble go.

Since getting my OnePlus One I haven't been able to use Semble. Quite frustrating that since I am running Cyanogen things like Semble couldn't be used.

The ASB app says that it doesn't work on 'rooted' devices. Interesting to see if that includes things like Cyanogen. I hope BNZ are not too strict on this too, as the OPO is such a great phone.

And the email from Snapper;

Today Semble have announced that they are discontinuing mobile payments as they focus on future technology.

Snapper began working with Semble on mobile payments in 2015, and we were impressed with their ability to bring together some of the country’s largest industry giants: Paymark, 2degrees, Spark, Vodafone, ASB and BNZ to work together to deliver New Zealand’s first fully integrated mobile wallet.

Semble will remain operational as a business, however they are going to discontinue their current mobile payment services.

So, what does this mean if you are a Snapper Semble Wallet user?

Snapper customers can continue to use the service for transport, but with some restrictions.

The closure of “mobile payment services” means that the Semble app will be removed from the Google play store and all app and customer support services from Semble will cease from the 25th August 2016.

As a Snapper Semble user you have a choice to make before this cut-off date:

  • CONTINUE using your Semble SIM with Snapper only (no banking services)
  • Or STOP using your Semble SIM with Snapper and revert to using a physical card to tag on and off

CONTINUE - You wish to continue to use your Semble SIM with Snapper

If you wish to continue to use your Semble SIM with Snapper to tag on and off, please follow the steps below or visit our website for a full step by step guide:

  • Within the Semble app, select that the Snapper card is “ON”
  • Next, uninstall the Semble wallet application
  • Continue to use the Snapper mobile app to check your balance, transaction history, purchase a pass and top up, as well as tag on & off the bus.

STOP - You wish to revert to using a physical card

If you no longer wish to tag on with your phone, we can assist you to transfer any existing funds from your Semble SIM to an existing or new Snapper card. Visit our website for a full step by step guide or call us on 0800 555 345 or visit one of the iSITEsin Wellington, and ask to transfer funds from your SIM onto a Snapper  card.  Our team is aware of this request and ready to help.

Once a SIM has had the balance transferred, onto a new Snapper card, you will no longer be able to use your phone to tag on and off the bus.

You will still be able to use the Snapper mobile app with your Snapper card to check your balance, transaction history, purchase a pass and to top up your card.  Simply hold the Snapper card to the back of your phone for the app to automatically launch, or tap the app icon.

Next steps.

If you are unsure how this change affects you, please call us on 0800 555 345 or email us at feedback@snapper.co.nz. The team are ready to help.

To the team at Semble - from one Kiwi company to another - we acknowledge your achievements, and are sad to see you leave the mobile payment service. We are proud of our partnership, and wish you the very best in your future technology endeavours.

For our customers, we have been working with Semble to minimise the impact to your service, but we would appreciate your understanding as we work through the changes, and start to investigate new technologies and options for the future.

I use Semble daily for my bus fares. It's been fantastic. I see that Snapper recommend uninstalling the Semble app, but state that Snapper payments should still work. They don't seem to indicate an end date for this so I'm led to believe that so long as the contactless payment side of the sim has the snapper payment data written to it before the app disappears, it'll work indefinitely. So long as Snapper don't disable anything from their end.

RIP Semble

I enjoyed being part of the original trial with VF and flashing my phone on the terminals. I met quite a few responses including 'don't be silly, you can't  use your phone' to utter amazement!

Asked ASB about removing my card from semble - received the following reply

Hi Greg, this will happen automatically very soon. A letter will be sent out shortly to explain :)

Last few times I've used the ASB app to pay its shown the same card number as my legacy plastic card in my list of transactions whereas semble shows the fake card number which is great to know where I last used the plastic for when I can't find it.

Hadn't noticed that before, but yes I see the same.  Perhaps @ASBBank could explain?  I am definitely using my Virtual card, which does have its own card number, so would be nice to see this reflected on the transactions

Your ASB Virtual card is essentially a digital version of your physical card, and the ASB Virtual number is shown on your transaction receipt. However, if there are any disputes or queries, we are able to track the transaction to the physical or virtual payment method. Thanks! ^SM

So why is the virtual number not shown in the app for what I have bought? I can never remember where I last had my card and I was messing about looking in the car for it because the last transaction was maccas but I had used the phone there, didnt have the card with me.

Sad to see it go, as stated earlier Semble could be used without waking the screen, so didn't even need to open the phone case. I was wondering why no other "Partners" ever seemed to show up. Now we know

RIP Semble
