kingjj: Two years ago my battery failed while in a parking building in town (jap car), only option was to call AA and get one delivered. AA Mobile battery guy arrives, quotes in excess of $220 for a battery than offers another option. $80 cash and he'd pass me a near new AA one. Two years on still works like a charm. Few weeks later my dad had to put new battery in his V6 Volvo... he's still recovering from the shock. Cost of living a.

common practyice whereby people go through scrap pile and get batteries that may have been replaced by warranty and on sell and pocket the cash, basically stealing if you didn't get an invoice. Mind you this is usually justified by people saying it does no harm etc etc etc.

bigger car, bigger engine, needs higher cca rating (cold cranking amps) than standard battery for smaller car = more expensive + add on the fact most new batteries are some sort of calcium / maintenance free / have fancy little indicator windows rather than a standard lead acid 2-300 is not hugely expensive for what you are buying

try buying a truck battery or a 'house' power supply battery for a boat = $$$

where abouts in the country are you?

Keep in mind that if you never do cold starts then you can massivly derate on the CCA figures - since NZ doesnt do cold you can get a decent saving there, but it will obviously die sooner than a larger CCA one will.

A NZ made Bosch silver 450 CCA battery cost me around $100 from repco 5 or 6 years ago.

Today a Century (OZ made?) 500 CCA battery would cost me around $170 from repco.

Oh and AA battery service quoted $180 ish for AA branded 500 CCA, and $200 ish for 600 CCA installed.

$275 Installed by the AA, everythings working ok. I still feel a little hard done by, but life goes on. :)

unkn0wn: Yeah, Euro cars can be expensive, the best option would be is to get car battery from [name deleted] give them a call they are the cheapest I have found so far have been using them since.

Unkown poster I would has at a guess they aren't the cheapest and maybe this is a shameless plug.

Batteries, like most grudge purchases, are low margin as most buyers look for deals therefore pricing is very close throughout the business as they all purchase like product for same cost regardless.

Looking at thier suppliers they won't have a price advantage and the only significant change in price is for inferior or lower spec'd product. I see they sell Lucas batteriees which is a branf name owned by Repco and supplied by Century so no price breaks on those.

As has been said before you need to know what you are getting prices on and ensure all products are the same spec otherwise you may not be getting any sort of deal.
