The event is now full, and we're accepting entries to the waiting list. If anyone let me know they're not coming I can then invite the next one in the list.

The last two days in NZ tech news have been laughable... Very misinformed stuff out there folks.

SIM cards don't need NFC. The solution going forward is NFC in the phone, the SIM card simply acts as the secure element which is required for transaction security.

True, but without Apple on board (and they're not unless they can find a way to take a cut of every transaction, they've made that pretty clear through their seeming inaction while still working on some kind of iTunes payment platform) we've still got an absolutely behemoth number of smart phones that just won't work with NFC, without it being on the SIM.  At the moment, a very small number of phones support it, so SIM based looks to be the way to go right now.

SIM based NFC will never go mainstream. End of story.

The only phones that will ultimately be approved by credit card companies who at the end of the day control the market are those with embedded NFC and the SIM acting as the secure element.

It doesn't matter if phones right now don't have NFC. In 2 years they all will.

It seems the cat is out of the bag about what we will be seeing tomorrow. The participants will be in to win some of the new NFC-enabled devices ;)

Well have to say the launch was good and yes NFC was right but sim based unlike some had thought. Well done to 2 degrees for the launch and a good night and also to LG and Snapper as well I look forward to the tech progressing and can't wait for a phone worthy of a upgrade from the Optimus 2x I have at the moment. :-)

Thanks 2degrees, Snapper and LG for such a detailed presentation, and for the nibbles and drinks.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to stay and chat afterwards, but my initial feeling is that the usefulness of this technology is currently limited somewhat by the regionalisation of Snapper. It's effectively useless in Christchurch, Hastings, and the many other places that I frequently travel to, and even in Wellington it has limited retail coverage and can't be used on the northern suburb buses.

Long term it will be exciting to see this evolve, but it will require Snapper to increase their geographic presence or for other payment platforms to come on board.

Alasta I too used to think that about Snapper being limited to Wellington is and could be limiting but as they pointed just the newer Snapper cards have over 180,000 in circulation and sure our population is quite a lot bigger than that but any business with half a brain can see that in the future this is a tech they should be able to see as another valuable service like EFTPOS was when it first came out.

Things will improve the more people that jump onboard with this will help other regions get involved a lot quicker too as in a few years (if not sooner) NFC will be everywhere (or at least widely used worldwide) giving huge opportunities for growth for companies to get onboard and tying in with a major cellphone company who's growth has already been great in a short period of time the possibilities are out there.

Any solutions mentioned for those who already have NFC capable phones? A bit redundant to have an NFC phone and also have to get an NFC sim. Maybe Snapper can just make an app?
