minimoke: Thanks Metservicecomms. While I'm here any news on the release of the android app?

I'm assuming from Jacqui's "[very shortly Sealed!]" that we will find out in the near future!!  Will be great to have the android app I agree.
And I would like to add my kudos for the prompt and direct response from Metservice - good work!

Ah, that old chestnut about us getting the ACTUAL weather fixed. Sorry, we have some super-bright people here but I think we'll leave it to the weather gods!

Re Android app (and iPhone app) - launch of both is scheduled for next week - very excite!!

MetServiceComms: Last week we launched sub-region forecasts for Wellington and Christchurch (Auckland was launched in December last year). When we went live, we'd removed the humidity and pressure info (rainfall was moved to the snazzy temp/wind/rain chart below the 10-day slider) - but feedback over the week has told us that this info is popular, so we're now working on bringing it back for you! Stay tuned over the next day or two to see it back in action.

Noticed the sub-regions today - looking at the map I can't quite find out wheter my suburb (Johnsonville) is  in Wellington City or Wellington Western Hills (which I suppose it is).

Is there a page showing a list of suburbs per sub-region?

Hi Mauricio - there isn't a list of suburbs per region, just the clickable zones on the map to give you an indication of area covered. I'm in Churton Park and use Western Hills as my reference.

Cheers
Jacqui

MetServiceComms: Yep, you're right, we think this would be useful particularly for farmers (indicator of frost and the like), so our Interactive Manager has it on the list. Now that sub-regionals are live - and once our smart phone apps go live [very shortly Sealed !] - the team will be on to the next round of tweaks so hope to see it sometime soon.

Cheers
Jacqui

I don't know why the delay has taken so long, at least 6 months since somone from the met said they would release one 'soon'. I have a Metservice app for my android already running, I made it in a week and use it all the time.  We are not talking brain surgery here.

I even teach my students how to code one, they have been learning Android for 3 weeks now and can make it OK in the classroom.  Do your developers want a copy of the instructions? It might give them an idea on how to code, obviously competency is a big issue.

Its not just the website in a webview, but a real android app made into a widget and on the front screen of the phone. I was thinking of running it from the lat and lon of the GPS to keep it up to date but at present it is adjusted for regions via a spinner pulldown list. If you want frost detection then its a couple of hours to code it, just weather conditions + temp maybe sending an SMS for raising an alarm. It shouldn't take 6 months to make.

I'm sure such help as you're offering would be useful, and who knows they may take it up. So far as taking 6 months, my guess is that the development of the Android app hasn't been their only job.

a link to tide / marine and other data being easily accessible from the app would be good

if the app displayed current humidity and wind info etc awesome

if it displayed current temperature on the icon on the home screen super awesome

i guess some of these things are personal preference though

First the website: whats with the mitsubishi ad running in the backgorund. A pretty ugly black screeen against the metservices web site. refreshed the page and the ad was gone.

Android ap. Loking good so far. A bit slow to load but pretty much no lag. Back button doesn't work so have to go to task manager and force close. Would be nice to have it defualt to , say "christchurch" screeen rather than "Weather Around NZ"

Hey guys, that app you are talking about is NOT the MetService app - it's a clone of our mobile website m.metservice.com which has been set up by a Spanish developer (looks like they're ripping off the Melbourne Age newspaper too, among others!).

Right now we're trying to get this 'rogue' app shut down by Google - we can't risk people thinking it IS from MetService and therefore relying on the voracity and timeliness of the data. Not to mention breach of copyright, trademark, etc.

Here's a 'sneak peek' screenshot of what you can expect from the REAL MetService app:

Looks more like a mockup than a screenshot of the actual app.. but I imagine they're aiming to make them pretty similar
