Had a boss who was a fitness freak but had back issues, he was at his desk all day doing work.

He decided to stand up all day as opposed to sitting down (he read this somewhere). So built his own desk so he could stand at it and do work. Never complained off back issues after(5 years).

Along the same futon idea -
http://www.innature.co.nz/
http://www.futonz.co.nz/

Relatively expensive, I guess, but worth getting options to think about.
I don't have either of those brands personally, but would like to get one eventually.

timmmay: Like I said, an osteopath has made a world of difference to me. Physiotherapy (no offense to the poster above) never did anything useful for me.

No offense taken, my comment was to go with what works as what chiros/osteos/physios do is mostly the same with good and bad ones of all.

The key is to be very suspicious if they decide that you need to come weekly for the rest of your life!

It may not be an issue of the bed. Walking helps a lot with this sort of thing, so up the ante if you're doing excercise already.

Edit: Sounds like you're walking lots already. Are you giving yourself pauses to move around inbetween sitting?

You mean like a chiropractor? Those guys are snake oil salesmen. I went to one for a month, $50 a visit, three times a week, 3 minutes per visit, no real gain. Six visits to an osteo and I was fixed up better than before.

nzkiwiman: 31 - so I really hope not!

If you are young and got arthritis (again, hope not!) then I recommend looking into changing your diet and cutting out carbs.

I got arthritis when I was young a few years ago (and I'm still younger than you now! just), changing my diet this year was a life safer. No more need for pain killers to allow me to sleep!

Sitting for more then a few hours a day is very bad for your health. http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/capital-life/5291850/We-re-sitting-ourselves-to-death

I built myself a standing desk at work using boxes (I am also a sysadmin). Its fantastic, I feel more alert especially in the afternoons. If I need to do a large piece of documentation I move my boxes and sit for an hour or so but apart from that (and meetings) I stand all day.

Studies have shown that even if you exercise everyday it will not reverse the effects of sitting for long periods. Do yourself a favor and stand!

Basically I am changing things that can be changed for a week or two - over the last two months I have done everything in the office - location of desk, height of monitors, placement of keyboard/mouse, replacement of keyboard and mouse, height of chair, replacement of chair.

Changing of the chair from a cushioned office with back tilt, height adjustable, pitch adjustable to a boring chair has done some good (less pain on one side of the groin). Other changes have not helped.

Since I have changed everything I can at work (aside from making my desk a standing desk), I am looking at what can be changed at home -- first stop, the bed. The reason for this is that I am generally pain free after my shower at night but after 7-9 hour sleep the pain is back.

As for walking, typically 1/2 hour 'slow' walk from car park to office before work
1/2 hour to 3/4 hour 'moderate' walk at lunchtime
Hour 'fast' with the dogs after work walk.

Compared to
Up and down all day helping people in the same office, at desk taking calls for people in other branches
Hour 'fast' with the dogs after work walk.

Suspect that 7 months unemployment with long periods of sitting at home and only the hour walk with the dogs being the main form of exercise started some changes inside of me ..

Once or twice a week I may park the car in a parking building next to work which eliminates the before work walk, but otherwise the lunch and dog walk are everyday (the dogs get annoyed if they can't go for a walk)

Understand the importance of exercise, but as soon as I stop the exercise my upper leg muscles/hips/butt/lower back seize up again. So to be moderately pain free I have to exercise 24/7 with no sleep, no sitting etc ??

I'm going to say this one more time, then I'm not following the thread any more.

Right now you're taking stabs in the dark to see if it helps. Go see a professional to help diagnose the issue, work out stretches and changes that can be made to really help you. I suggest an osteopath as the first point of call, though they may recommend others.

Then you didn't read the first post!

Doctor/Physio and Osteopath have all been involved
I have my 3rd Osteopath appointment on the 13th August.

He has suggested more exercise
I have counted with 'how much exercise a day do I need - I have increased my daily walking from what I used to do at the start of the year and a year ago and I am in more pain now than I was 3 months ago, at the start of the year, and a year ago (ie, no pain)

No you don't :)
I'm plum out of ideas. But then I'm not a professional or an expert in this field so can hardly comment.

Hoping the bed situation helps, goodluck.

And my blood tests just came back clear.
So, yeah - no one really knows what is wrong with me.

The night cramp pill I borrowed a few off from someone who was having night cramps have - in the last few hours - made my legs feel normal which is fantastic. Of course when I mentioned to the doctor about taking one of these pills a few months ago *and only the one* and how good it made me feel over the course of just under a week, he mentioned they are for night cramps only and didn't seem to really care that I told him they made me feel BETTER!
 - as did 40% shot of alcohol

So anyway, back to the bed.
Have to head to the bed stores in the area and see what is what and how much they cost.

Over the next week I am going to swap out my double for the spare single we have at home.
See if the single reduces any of the pain I am feeling ..

Have been puzzling over your problem and discussing with my wife and we are puzzled by the leg problems and cant remember coming across it as a bed related problem but are keen to see how you lie and in what positions. Back issues we go through a lot.

Also wondered what the osteopath has been doing for you and wether you have seen a podiatrist. would recomend Fit Feet in Consultancy house. I do have the dreaded osteoarthritus and have recently had 4 months off recovering from a knee operation and have found the correct supports in my shoes have helped a lot.

Good luck
