Beucase of the mess of the HOP card right now, I'd stay away from it. Have a look at the Maxx pricing page for Northern Busway pricing. If you do want to take advatage of the free use of the Link with a hop card, you can pick one up for $10 and top up a small amount so at least it is in credit and usuable. Hopefully in the near future, intergrated ticketing will become clearer but too many vested interests and too much $ invovled to make any outcome postive for the public.

Asrafrate: How does the HOP card work? Do you just top up your card with X amount and it takes the correct amount off depending on how many stages you're doing?

As for hitch hiking... eep no way! Too many scary people out there.

Credit should not expire, it just sits in Snapper's bank account. There are rumors of transition plans to the Hop card 2.0 which should work city wide in the future but so far nothing concrete. To be fair, if you get a Hop card and then need to pop around town on the odd journey then you have it to use.

Those aren't rumours. If you have a current HOP card, you will be able to get a new HOP card once the Thales system is in place at no charge, and have that stored value transferred.

Depending where exactly on Upper Queen Street you want to get, there is the option of parking (for free) after Ponsonby Rd (in the residential area, on the street). From there it's a 5-10 minute walk to Upper Queen.
I've seen many people do that.

No idea. Snapper's been mucking around and holding back the launch of the new HOP for months. We were supposed to have it by now.

If you use a HOP card, you get 10% off the price of the trip. Only works on NZ Bus vehicles (Metrolink, North Star, Waka Pacific, Go West, Link) - can't use it on Ritchies (Northern Express), Howick & Eastern, Birkenhead Transport, or Urban Express. The new HOP when it comes out will work on all of them, and they'll swap your current HOP for a new HOP then. You can top up at some dairies or Britomart (they'll add 10c to cover the "topup fee") or you can buy a Snapper Feeder and that allows you to top up at home over the internet with a credit card.
