I've completed this survey for the last few years (at least 3 or 4 consecutive years that I can recall).

At the end of the day, it takes very little time to fill in as you should have ready access to all the required figures and information assuming you maintain good financial records in your business.

If the information is valuable to decision makers, both public and private, in the ICT industry then why would you go out of your way to not complete the survey? Personally I'm all for providing information that may be useful for those that help to plan and shape the industry I work in

Well I have only got the one in 14 years so I guess I can't really complain if others get them a lot more regularly. I am fiercely protective of my personal information and this feels nosy and intrusive, especially given the amount of time I need to get the information they want.

I fail to see how realistically anyone would get any benefit out of the information unless they are looking for areas to levy additional fees and want to see what areas are high revenue earners.

I'd like to know how the information in this survey would possibly be useful.

They've provided you with multiple means of contacting them so what don't you do so and get the answers you require direct from the source?

I lived with a flatmate who years ago lived in a st that got picked to be followed for a 10 survey thing.
Everyone on that st got interviewed every year for ten years. If they moved they got followed and everyone they lived with after also got interviewed, but only while living with the original person from the street. How annoying!

Maybe we should get the chief statistician to go and survey Ewen MacDonald? and David Bain while we are at it.

They tried to do this with us. They got quite insistent, I got even more insistent, they said legal action would follow, I said I would defend myself, I never heard anything after that.

What a ridiculous intrusion into peoples lives it must be.

This sums it up.  I have completed this over the years & have had no issues with it at all. Sure they sound pushy but that is to get past people that think oh i'm to protective & won't complete this..

1. It is legit
2. No information is shared at an individual/business level, everything is all grouped up into the relavent demographic or industry
3. If you don't do it you should be fined

The information is used to provide the necessary statistics involved with running a country.  I'm also pretty sure (complete guess but would make sense) that there is a clause in the Companies registration process that if asked you will do it?

I also had the business surveys, and had to complete regularly for about 2 years, and then they just stopped coming. Wasn't a big deal to complete, but the time taken to complete would be very dependent on the size of your business and how you do your accounts.

You don't enter into a contract during the company formation process, so you'd be wrong.  The Ministry relies solely on the force of law for enforcing conditions on company registrations.

As noted earlier by another poster, the law in force in this particular case is the Statistics Act, which sets penalties for not complying with a statistics request at $2000 + $80/day for companies, and $500 + $20/day for individuals.  The only question you may legally refuse to answer is religious denomination.

As I am officially religiously registered as a Klingon, I am wondering if I could get away with it like that ?

Yes I am kidding, I don't expect them to make an exception because I am Klingon.

Ok, I am kidding about being Klingon as well.

No, you can't refuse to do the whole survey based on religious grounds, it just means that you can refuse to answer the single question if it's asking what your religion is.  And even then, the manner of refusal is even defined in law (you must refuse by writing the word "object" into the field).

But you are agreeing to operate the company as per NZ's laws.. And you do this by signing the Director forms..

Never said it was a contract, So I'd not be wrong.
