That makes sense. It may be geared to the same proportions as their new print layout.

Overall impression is a longer front page and less headline links and bad readability due in large part to bold use everywhere.

In reality there may be the same number of headline links but the readability is horrible on my 24".

Early days but they will get a lot less clicks into the stories from me in the meantime.

Layout on the story pages has not changed a great deal. Don't like the new font but no real problems there in comparison.

looks like crap on windows 8/IE 10 until you force it into compatibility mode.

then it just looks boring.

The only plus for me is that there's now a point of difference between NZherald and Stuff.

The overuse of bold is painful and even though the front page probably isn't any longer than it used to be it sure seems that way.

You would have thought that they would have made it a responsive web design, with autoscaling css to the different resoltuions, inclusing mobile devices. Many new websites now have responsive designs. I personally like the old website better, as it had mega menus with the main articles. This one only seems to have normal drop down ones. It actually looks older with an older style to the previous design.

Microsoft designs are nice with the minimalist styling, but I am sure they paid a lot for that.
I guess the new NZH website does look more like a standard news website now, and more like a newspaper with the more cluttered look. 'More is more', rather than 'less is more'.

I was actually referring to Metro which is ghastly.

I like stuff.co.nz for layout but the content is fairly horrible.

It's ok - looks a lot like the BBC news website (I preferred the old version of the bbc news web site)

The same comments and design philosophies about their re-design could also be applied to the Herald's:

Doesn't work properly on work machines running IE, Lots of missing links and overlaps. Preferred the old site even though it was too cluttered. If only it could be as simple as the iPhone app, one long organised list.

Wow I couldn't disagree more, I would be a lot happier if they HAD copied Stuff.co.nz which is well spaced out and has clear category differentiation

Agree totally. The new Herald site has similar problems (for me at least) as the old one, in that there is no real pattern to the various news sections to my mind. "Form over function" springs to mind - albeit the "form" isn't even very likeable to my untrained eye!!

A simple old brain like mine far prefers the clearly located sections as displayed on the Stuff site - which is why I use it predominantly. At least I can clearly find key headlines, and the main sections - although agree that content is not always necessarily up to scratch (journalistic standards rather than web design issue!)
