The Empire Strikes Back is of course one of the best.

I'll also mention the first Starship Troopers movie, since it needs more love (and a decent sequel).

Oooh so many choices.. my favourite sci-fi though is the type that makes me think "what if". Going by this criteria I'm going to have to say surrogates .... I love the idea of a society living by proxy.. maybe setting up macros for day to day drudgery or tweaking your visual range to incorporate ultraviolet for a day.. hooking a third arm directly to my subconscious just because. Now none of this happened in the movie . But it did make me think what if.

I would put MATRIX as my all time favourite sci-fi followed by Back to the Furture..

Might I also add I loved the Sylvester Stallone Judge Dredd.. So very much looking forward to this one..

Has to be The One for me. The idea of multiverses merged into a movie with kickass action and fighting scenes is just amazing!

I watched this with my older brother when I was young and thought it was the best thing I had ever seen. So many cool concepts and I think one if not...Arnie's best!

Primer (2004) it was written by an engineer and made time travel seem like something somebody had already done in a garage somewhere across town. The movie cost less than $10k to make and is technically better than any other time travel movie ever made.

If you are going to rent one time travel movie, this is it.

Matrix:

The movie was excellent in every way, but the 1 scene that blew my mind more than any other part of any other movie was the scene when Neo exited the Matrix and discovered that he had been in a goo tub his whole life. Looking around at all the other people in the tubs added to the whole "whooooa!" effect. It helped a lot that this was not spoiled by the previews, which is the case for 99% of movies.

I'm not one for memorabilia that much, but I still have my original release C3PO (rather battered, with a glued-on leg).

I'm really unable to pick out a single "best" movie, there are just so many with elements that bring them to the fore - it could be 5th Element (excellent world-building, which I wish someone would go back to one day), or Star Wars (excellent world-building which I wish someone *else* had gone back to), Pitch Black (now *that* had a bad-ass main character, I only hope the next Riddick movie can match it), maybe even WALL-E (so few words and yet there's so much was communicated)... Probably just Star Wars - it was the first blockbuster scifi I saw, and was pretty much a formative experience for me.

The first Matrix movie - the mystery of it and the epic ending made it the most memorable. Down the rabbit hole, only get that feeling the first time u watch it :-)

Hmm...Bladerunner, Total Recall, Matrix, Dune, Serenity, The Island, Donnie Darko, Starship troopers, dark city, Truman Show, Primer, Gattaca, Equilibrium, 2001, Day the earth stood still, Delicatessen, Eternal Sunshine, Alien series, all good in their own ways...and that's just a few of the many...

Which one would I sit down and watch over and over again?

I would probably pick Bladerunner. Awesome depths to that movie along with action and humour.
Would be a tossup between Delicatessen and Total Recall for second place. Would depend on my mood when you asked. ;-)

I have the DVDs for most of these movies - if I get some spare time I will scan them...

I am a true Sci-Fi nerd (Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG, Babylon 5 etc) and I have to say my favourite of all time was most definitely Serenity.

It was modern, but original. So many modern movies are just rehashes of old stories. The characters really felt real, they were heroes, but flawed heroes - in other words, human.

Dark City is my all time favourite movie. Just an amazing film with a great story line that successfully combines film noir, 1950s detective style movies and sci-fi, along with some amazing special effects, great actors and very interesting costume design. This film was also the pre-cursor to The Matrix and Inception, both of these films have borrowed very heavily from Dark City's themes / Effects. If you haven't seen it, you really need to.

As for an image - I won an NZ Herald competition and got the How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days board game, along with a matching t-shirt.

The first movie my mum ever took me to. Empire Strikes Back. We watched it at St James so it was coupled with a visit to the big city, which was a rarity for me.

Somewhere between the theatre and home, she bought me this audiobook. Which I promptly listened to repeatedly for a a few days. Goes to show how much the sound engineering had to do with the atmosphere of that movie.

While it doesn't have laser guns, aliens or advanced technology time travel. A Clockwork Orange (1971) is my all time favorite SciFi movie. It has everything, it's weird, sometimes disgusting, bold, very well written, very well directed, a timeless classic and the most important point is that the scientific idea it's based on is very much valid and can be done with some researching.

It also shows without any exaggerating how corrupt the society really is.
