Jas777: The one thing to take into consideration is that people in NZ think in the singular. How much does each individual person get whereas overseas the money would be pooled for communal meals.

Also less regulations overseas means food is cheaper to make and sell. You can get a plate of Pad Thai in Bangkok off a street vendor for 30 baht ($1.2)

And as I've learnt first hand that 30 Baht Pad Thai can help reduce your food bill even further with the resulting week of food poisoning...

I agree with the sentiment here, Kiwi's do like to only think of themselves, once you start adding people and their small budgets together you start to see economies of scale.

Kyanar:
Except that under National, very soon we may have people at this line. .

What a load of rubbish. We have social housing and tax payer income going to the benificiaries. That puts them well above the povery line.

We already have them declaring that if you have children 3 and over, if you don't have them in pre-school, then the government will slice your benefit in half - despite the fact that we have beneficiaries taking their children out of pre-school because it's a choice between pre-school and food.  We have them declaring that if you refuse even one job they consider suitable, they will cut off your benefit entirely - despite the fact that WINZ is well known for setting up inappropriate job matches (in the Herald today was one fellow who would have been cut off because WINZ decided to put him forward for a role as a bouncer at a club, a role which carries significant dangers for someone not well versed in defense and in top shape)..

Its a simple concept: If you have the money to feed you have the moeny to breed. If indviduals don't have teh intellectual capacity to grasp that them its perhasp time we take soemthing out of that equation.

We really do have people that sleep on bus shelters and live off whatever they can buy with what strangers drop in their bags on the street..
Yes we do - and  number of them do it as a choice. Strange choice I'm sure to some of us but there are people who prefer not to live in hostels or in sheltered accomodation. Most, as a genralisation would have some mental health issue and have access to the sickness benifit - thats $205 a week.

So no, you can't give thanks that we don't have anyone nearing the poverty line because we do.  A lot.  And to suggest that we don't and that they should just shut up and get over it is irresponsible, insensitive and just plain ludicrous.
I'm not suggesting benificiaries should shut up and get over it. I am suggesting we should not consider the less well off in NZ as near the poverty line because they aren't. $1.25 a day vs $29 a day puts paid to that idea.
