NonprayingMantis,

That is true. I should have clarified a bit better. I was thinking more in terms of network/pay tv provided content.

The TV networks and SKY are way behind the times now with programs not in 1080p or very low bit rates. Just think of the TV channels that are not in HD NOW. The new technology is going to take way more grunt which will cost someone like SKY way more to provide which they will want to pass the cost on for, but will enough consumers be willing to pay those costs?

Sky has no incentive to not be behind the times. They are a practical, if not quite literal, monopoly. I've been a customer for over 10 years. In that time the only thing Sky has done for me is raise my prices.* I'll be cancelling next month as I find that unblock-us.com and Netflix offers a better service at far less cost. Hell, I could add Hulu and Pandora as well and still come out ahead of Sky.

*OK, sure they've added a few channels I don't give a rat's bottom about and have never tuned into even accidentally. No sign of SyFy though.
