michaelmurfy:  They asked what kind of damage it could do if it dropped out of the sky. Multikill?

Could've been worse: you could have lost it in broad daylight surrounded by skyscrapers, onlookers, and someone with a video camera :)

Haha - we are quite lucky here in Christchurch in regards to tall buildings and a city centre :) - I'm surprised that didn't smash the window when it crashed though, looks like it was carrying quite a bit of weight.

It looks as though it might have been some sort of 'commercial' video-recording fliight. Seems to be a camera slung underneath, in addition to the pilot - a guy with a movie camera and another guy with a video headset?

Part 101.211 prohibits the operation of model aircraft at night outdoors.

And from the possible map area, although unintentionally, 101.205 is also violated.

If it has flown higher than 400ft, 101.207 too as you are well inside controlled airspace there.

I don't think you want to draw the attention of the CAA.

Good news!

I did get it back, it was off in an open field in Papanui near Northlands Mall, a guy saw my article in The Press and contacted me, turns out it almost clipped his house at high speed and crashed in the field behind his house, was still going for a good 1hr before the LED's turned off.

The guy got the tip from one of his mates on Facebook about seeing it in the paper, he then got the paper and saw my article, he actually picked me and my flatmate up from my house to drive us out there, had flown for 10.4km according to GPS.

Anyway I am a happy man!

Indeed... what condition was it in? (i.e., any damage?)

Pretty good condition, it was half in water so lost a few of the speed controllers & landing gear. But frame was fine and the half that wasn't in water is all spotless. Quite a good test!

Awesome, glad you got it back! I'm tempted to build one now :-)

Out of interest, not knowing the area at all, how did where it ended up tie in with your original predictions?

Cheers
