If it makes you feel better I tried selling my '84 famila to the wreckers but they werent that interested. Was yours a later model?
I managed to sell it in the end to a scrap metal dealer for three hundred !
Now just before you go thinking your cars on the scrap heap.... it probally wont be as most of these car scrap metal guys ask for ID, proof of ownership and they record the chassis/VIN numbers to cover themselfs incase of stolen cars. The last thing they want is to re-export or re-use chassis's that are reported stolen.
Your car will surface somewhere... if not in ChCh, somewhere rural or somewhere far far away. How much gas in the tank?
It sounds like oppurtunist theifs breaking into a reltivley easy to break into car and taking it for a spin/used it to travel to a specifc destination for christmas) and bonus round was the discovery of the wallet.

Just to be clear, im no crook. I just know that these cars are easy to break into. (I used to work in a garage and very often I had to use the magic 'spatula' to unlock cars because the owners locked their keys in the ignition.... so I became very good at opening car doors).
I had a pretty similar experience a few years back with a beautiful old classic Audi. Car was stolen from outside my house and had a spare cell in it that I used to leave in there as a back up, The car was supposedly used to then raid a performance car shop and steal many $1000's worth of parts... Now this was back in the CDMA days and a few days later I checked and the thieves had swapped their number onto the ESN of my phone. I gave all this information to the police and with a warrant they could quite easily have tracked this person down via their account or phone calls made etc. As far as I am aware the police did absolutely nothing about it, couldn't care less that I gave them information that would have led directly to a good suspect...
Found the car burnt out down at the river a week later and never heard a peep back from the police.
Sorry to put a negative spin on it but don't expect much from the police about it.
On a more positive spin my car was broken into on my honeymoon in Taupo. Cash, Cellphones, Snorkling gear, Digi cam (with all our honeymoon pics on it) and wallets all stolen. The police caught the thief the next day and informed us he was an escaped convict on the run when it had happened (apparently escaped during a prison transfer). We got our gear back (including the photos on the cam!) and the insurance company replaced all the cash and phones etc pretty much on the spot. At least this was a proper LEGIT criminal that did us over and not some kids.
I guess there are good and bad experiences when it comes to the police and how much effort they put in, Hope yours turns out good!
