He is right but if you cant afford to have one tailored then Munns has some nice suits at nice prices. What you are best to do if you want to spend bugger all is buy summer suits in winter and vice versa.

Just make sure you buy classic suits and not ones that are just fashionable this season.

As TonyHughes is saying though, an off the shelf item will never look or feel as good as a tailored suit.

The force is strong with this one!

I recently bought a suit at Munns on Queen Street.

Excellent quality Merino suit, reduced in their sale from over $1000 to $399.

When they have a sale, they really have a sale.

I'm one of those that have tried everywhere for a suit that fits my shape - I am slightly overweight and not tall, so I find it difficult to find a suit off the rack that fits length, sleeve, chest and waist area in the right proportions.

My Munns-sourced suit came straight off the shelf (with a lot of help from their excellent staff) and has not been altered.

I can't recommend them enough.

Beware of the cheaper suits that have a polyester blend. Go for 100% wool.

Hallensteins used to sell reasonable all wool suits for about $400+, but I'm not sure they do any more.

Polyester blends are cheaper to make, but the material doesn't breathe very well so you get way too hot in summer.

I've had good luck with Scriber and Marks for good suits with good prices. They're in Dressmart in Aucks IIRC.

There's also Working Style, who I'd definitely recommend, but they aren't cheap - you'll get a damn good suit from them though.

Check out some of Rembrandt's stores - www.rembrandt.co.nz - they sell decent suits.

You can occasionally find some OK stuff at Tarocash stores too.

Avoid anything that isn't 100% wool for a daily wearer. Also avoid Hallensteins, Barkers, Farmers, Meccano. Also, if you find something that you really like get it with two trousers.

Just go to Dress Smart and spend a day trying on suits from all the different stores. Working Style has some fantastic suits but they are expensive. There was another great suit store in that mall for some decent prices but I can't remember the name now.

Handle9: Cambridge outlet store is very good and super cheap. I got a new 100% wool suit for $250 just before Christmas. Not the best suit in the world but still a quality suit from a good manufacturer.

They have seconds, end of lines and existing ranges. Good value locally made and great quality. They have all sizes too so finding a jacket and pants that both fit well is easy. Store is in New Lynn

Agree - I buy all my suits from Working Style - and they are having a sale now (will be advertised from next Monday, but its on now)

I got mine when I went to Thailand. Lots of tailors running around trying to get your business. Cost of a flight and the suit would probably be cheaper than some of the suits you buy here :)

As Adam said, if you buy one, get 100% wool. A good wool suit will be good for winter and summer without being hot or cold - just right.

Cheap suits will have cheap cuts. It's a trade off. You don't have to buy the most expensive one or go tailor made but make sure you try and compare.

A good suit should last years. Ideally you need two and it would be good if each had two pairs of trousers.

Is this for work of special events?

+1 to the Cambridge outlet store on dominion road.

I got 2 suits (one with a spare pair of pants, so 2x jackets and 3x pants) from there late last year for around $550. It may not be "the best suit in world", but I don't think you can get much better even for double the price.

Given you are in Auckland you should at least go in and try a few on. If you go to another store you could easily spend more than $550 on a single suit which may not even be as good.

Agree - I buy all my suits from Working Style - and they are having a sale now (will be advertised from next Monday, but its on now)

what price range is working styles suits? and what price range are they when they are on sale?

Last suit I got was $400, on sale down from $750. I'm very happy with it. I have two suits, but I really need another, and one of them is coming to the end of it's life (4 years old now, so it's done bloody well!)

The pleasant gent at Munns told me that a good suit (if it is not the only one you have) shoud last between 2 and 4 years, depending on how hard you are on it.
He also recommended getting two pairs of trousers and stretching out the life of your suit that way (as the jackets invariably don't get quite as much of a hammering as the pants do).
