I wonder how long before someone goes to court to contest a ticket based on their assertion that it was the car beside them. Personally I think that this camera is just another revenue gathering device. From memory before the original one was installed there had not been a bad / fatal accident on the gorge going down hill..

nickb800: could be six different cameras/lasers in one, each targeted on each lane, thus each could have a different limit

Apparently the camera was trialed on the old Hutt Road which is 4 lanes so it probably doesn't have dedicated cameras/lasers.

I agree that they can probably tell the difference between traffic directions but still don't think its feasible to automatically apply different limits to each direction.

I know with my motion detection cameras (web ip cameras) that you can assign zones for detection but this camera must be seriously good if it can do all of what they say it can...

How about just obeying the posted speed limits rather than trying to work out if you can break them, they're there for a reason.

freitasm: Sometimes you can't go too fast uphill there because there are some drivers doing 50 on the right lane... Slow drivers are slow.

I hate the trucks that use the middle lane all the way up. They're often going far slower than 50. Dangerous. There are several hundred metres at the top they can use to change from the left hand lane before it disappears into Johnsonville.

Going downhill I wonder how many times a year people change their brake pads. Sometimes you see people going with brakes on all the way from the first 80km/h sign on the overpass up until they reach the SH1/SH2 merge.

People with automatics?

I was a little cheesed the other day when I found out it does all 7 lanes! I usually cruze up there at 100k. They have been testing the unit recently and have just added another "lazor" on the right hand side of the unit.

It no longer needs a flash because it uses IR, can do all 7 lanes (incl Newlands off-ramp), has lane detection, can do up and down hill traffic and can adjust for adjustable speed limits.

Anyone got some spray paint?

I believe the middle lane is the correct one for them to use, to avoid lane changes first into the left lane then back into the middle lane. It when there's a truck/bus in multiple lanes that there are problems, or all three lanes. Sometimes a truck that can go 52kph decides to pass a truck going 50kph with no regard for other traffic.

I have wondered that too on some of the trips I have done to Wellington. I am a firm believer in using a lower gear to hold the car at the right speed going down hill, especially the Ngauaranga gorge.

Different limits in each direction is easy - set camera to -80 +60. Or vice versa.

Which is cheaper to replace - worn brake pads or worn gearbox?

I drive an automatic. When going downhill there I drop to 3 and it stays just under 80. No need to touch the brakes at all. Sometimes I move to the right lane because people in front of me are braking and doing less then 70km/h.

Not also Auto's can do this.

Some just have 1,2,D or L (Low),D etc. If you have a tiptronic type auto you could.

I have heard that modern gearboxes aren't designed to transmit force from the wheels to the engine. No idea if that's true or not.

However I call BS on the following statement;

If the speed limit in the gorge is changed temporarily, the new camera can be adjusted remotely

So, how does the camera differentiate between the uphill traffic at 80km/hr and the downhill traffic at 60km/hr

Something doesnt add up unless the camera allows different speed zones within the capture area?

it a digital photo, it know which lane triggered the photo, even if can not have 2 setting for speed, all you need to do is take ALL photo of car going over 60, and throw any photo in lane 1 - x that is 80km/h limit if it below 80, and keep if over, not hard to program, and even if not in software, it easy to do with 1 person reviewing the photos.

When the speed limit is 80 in one direction, you're going to be taking a photo of basically every car going in that direction. That would be hundreds of cars an hour. Maybe thousands during peak.

You'd have to have a team of people working full time around the clock just to keep up.
