Centre appears to be Motutapu Island

As I understand it, aftershocks are never bigger than the original earthquake?

How is it possible in this case then? We have a 3.7 then a 4.0....

At the folks place in Castor Bay, looking out over the harbour. Directly out to Motutapu. Feels a little close to home, only a few kms to the epicentre. First was very subtle, we felt it but was not worrying. Second was much more noticeable.

Cheers,
Joseph

The 4 wasn't an aftershock, it was the main shock, any thing before it was the foreshock.  (assuming we don't get a bigger one, then the mainshock will become a foreshock).  Foreshock, mainshock and aftershock are all relative terms

I thought someone was jumping on my bed... it woke me up as I was falling asleep from watching a movie, felt quite surreal waking up to it.

I had to laugh at the short time it took for comments on twitter about a new volcano coming or maybe rangitoto waking up
