Do bills or bank statements have some sort of anti-forgery technology that I'm not aware of? How does a piece of paper which anyone can make with a word processor and a printer have more authority about a person's address, than what the person whose identity has been verified with a passport says they live?

My name is Stephen Smith, it seems originality was not top of my parents agenda when naming me. In the last company I worked for there was 10 Stephen Smiths of some variation in the wider company directory and 2 of them in the same building as me - without my birth date I could be confused with any one of them.

So I think one of the reasons they require birth dates may have something to do with this.

Johnr I get my power and internet/phone bills online and both come with a pdf copy, from memory these both have my address on them

It and mothers maiden name are needed when you send things for collections usually. Sucks for twins I guess.

My issue with all this is that I was not aware that a power account, or any other forms of accounts are a prerequisite to having a drivers license. Passing a driving test was.

How can they refuse to issue a drivers license to someone who doesnt provide that information. My power account or bank details are none of their damn business. Add to that, I try to have nothing get delivered to the house since mail is insecure, I have a PO Box. Which was fun to get since in the past before I got my own one, I had everything going to my old works PO Box, so I actually had nothing to prove to the post office my home address and infact ended up using something that was sent to me ages ago to an old address to sign up for that.

Why do they even need my "home" address for a drivers license?

AA seem to complicate the process as much as possible. I went to get rego with out the reminder slip. Fill out the form as normal, Put Mazda 3 as the make and model, get told no that's not right it needs to be Mazda Mazda3 Sportshatch MPS 2.3 exactly like the rego lable. Never been to VTNZ and have them be that meticulous.

At the post office I just put the rego number and let them do the rest. Why it even needs a bloody form I dont know.

The information required to confirm identification is a legal requirement. See Land Transport (Driver Licensing) Rule 1999, Rule 10.

Couldn't say. You'd need to contact NZTA. This must happen from time to time so there must be a process in place you'd think.

They have my photo on file I have a car and motorbike registered under my name and address

There is no valid reason I can see why they need this as a requirement

You mean other than it being the law and them not having to give you a licence if you don't meet the requirement.

What you also need to consider is that the AA or wherever you go to get your licence are only agents for NZTA. They don't know you from a bar of soap and don't have access to all the information that NZTA have on you. They are just following a process.

Yes they do have access to all the INFO my friend works for the AA and I can register my car at the same counter

I doubt very much that they have access to all the information. In any event you were there to replace your licence so why should they check what vehicles you own and where they're registered to.
And if your friend works for AA he could have told you what information was required to replace your licence so it wouldn't have come as a shock or annoyance to you.

You don't get my point the annoyance is they need it in the first place as there is no valid reason I can see not even my friend that works for the AA can see any reason
