When I started with ComnpuServe Pacific in 1996 I was told specifically that it was Jiff ... and they were the first to utilise the format anyway .

"According to Steve Wilhite, the creator of the GIF format, the intended pronunciation deliberately echoes the American peanut butter brand, Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF", spoofing this brand's television commercials. As of 2013[update], Wilhite remains annoyed that there is debate over the pronunciation".

I have always pronounced it GIF, as it was how i read the file extension when I first saw it.

The creator has the final say though, but everyone will pronounce things differently.

It's not "jraphics", it's "graphics"...

I totally read that as "giraffe-ics".

Nobody ever told me that it was supposed to be pronounced one way or the other, but I always used a hard G because I took it from "graphics", which has a hard G. The inventor can now tell me it's a soft G, but after 20+ years I'm probably not going to correct myself.

Never heard anyone pronounce it Jiff before - Even if the creator thinks it should be pronounced Jiff I think its probably taken on a life of its own.

Its reminded me of the early 80s when the place I worked for got a very large box (size of a small fridge). The device was a Router. (this is prior to the internet of course) Now the company that built the hardware was english (ICL - International Computers Limited for any really old people) and they said it was pronounced 'rooter' which is the english pronunciation. My boss (never a shy man) said 'no way I am pronouncing it that way. So the american pronunciation prevailed.

I have never heard of a router pronounced the english way since - Except a TV program I was watching once.

For those of you outside the Aussie/Kiwi area the word root is also slang for intercourse in this part of the world...
