Clutter is bad. Don't live in the past.

$1 reserve on Trademe is good. There's always someone who wants or needs the old stuff.

I have sold a lot of things on trademe, and find that $1 is a total waste of time, especailly on less desirable items that will only sell for that. I would prefer to how the item away, than waste my time with that, as you get all sort of time wasting questions, and often the item will only go for $1. I stick a minimum of $5 on any item

Cant be stuffed dealing with trademe unless I am going to get at least $20 for something, unless it would cost me heaps to dispose of like my pile of rocks which they guy ended up only taking half of anyway.

Trademe's hardly worth dealing with any more with their extortionate fees.

This.

I have a large collection of old toys. Anyone want a Pentium I? Seriously, I try to give them away and if that fails I store them. There is no inorganic collection here and disposing of them costs $$$. They will probably keep getting dusted until they end up in a skip bin.

I've got 2 tv's sitting in the garage -- one , a 7 yr old 42" plasma, and, the other an 5 yr old x-series Sony LCD 46" which was worth 6k-7k new I think.

What do you do with these things ? I won't get much so don't want to sell, but don't want them either.

I might throw one in the dump, and , put the other at the bach. But, TV at the bach? Really!!!

i have just replaced my 6 year old 46" samsung, ill probably throw it up on trademe, ill be happy with around $400 for it, has a really nice picture.  just bought a new tv for lounge, 50" lounge tv went to bedroom, 46" was in the bedroom.

most stuff i either
1. give away to family/friends
2. sell to family/friends very cheap
3. try and sell them on geekzone
4. chuck them on trademe if dont sell on GZ
5. throw them out if less than $30 or so.

I pass good stuff down through the family and hoard other stuff until such time that i feel motivated to bin it.

Did that on Sunday - went to the tip - 80% of the junk was technology...top of the line (mid-90's) VCR that no longer worked, 6 disc cd player (in working condition but totally redundant with digital music), etc, etc.

I must've thrown out 30 USB cables.

Well selling something for $1 isn't worth it as you only make 50 cents profit, and the time to list it takes too long. $10-15 minium really is what I would sell things at, and drop them to a minium of $5 if they fail to sell. I would never start low at a $1

I have found that you can get some very good prices by selling stuff on trade me, especially if people get into a bidding war. The commission isn't bad when you compare it to normal auctions, and the reach you get. But I hate it that you have to pay to just have your photo appear on the webpage listings page. Yet on mobile devices, the photo appears without paying. It is like the webpage version is more crippled that the mobile web and app version, which doesn't make sense.
But selling computer stuff IMOH is a waste of time. Furniture and vintage items on the other hand sell well.

richms: Or build another shed or garage on otherwise pointless lawn. That's win/win since you have less to mow as well.

Mmm.
I had a neighbour like that. Bought a really crappy house because of the shed/garage.
It was massive, 4 cars wide, 3 or 4 cars long, hard to tell (because it was so full)........and 2 stories.

When he moved there he bought a large moving truck.
This was because it took 13 trips with the truck to transport the contents.

One of my cats got stuck up there one day, they came over and asked me to go up and rescue her.

No kidding, it was stuffed. Tidy but stuffed, like a giant 3D maze....no wonder the cat got lost......took me ages to maneuver my way back out.

They continued to haunt TRademe and attend swap meets and so on......

Seriously, the Salvation Army do good things, they get their money from selling this stuff, not that they sell it for a lot - also to help the poor....

And they come and get it.

With me, it depends on the toys, the options, whether they realistically have any use/value, and the space I have available. I tend to either:

- Move them to bedroom or spare room, where they bump really old kit further down the queue.
- Store them in the garage for a bit, "in case I need them again"
- Give them to friends and family.
- Give them to the Sallies or other charity
- Put them in the Skip I get each year for my Christmas cleanup

Haven't sold anything on Trademe yet. Nothing with enough value to make me put up with the hassle and loss of time. No one wants it, meh, into the skip!
