Wow, stay safe everyone. Try not to move too far for cover, here in Christchurch it was a tad dangerous moving for the doorframes since by the time your next foot hit the ground the ground and everything on the floor had shifted. If your near a desk or a table I'd suggest ducking under that instead.

I probably don't have to say this to geekzone, but if things get bad network with neighbours/friends/relatives; the radio stations are pretty useless for emergancy information; at least in Chch they were. Also don't rely on CD sector posts, never saw any open in Christchurch; you'd probably be better off heading for churches/stadiums.

Also if your driving be careful, there could be sinkholes that haven't broken through the surface yet.

i suspect there is quite a big of damage. One news showed quite a big crack on the footing of one old building, think it was the old parliment library building.

I felt quite seasick after/during that one. Quite a few friends have commented they thought they were having a dizzy patch or similar only to find it was an earthquake and motion sickness. Some of the quakes felt in the north island recently have been quite a different rolling type motion than previous sharp shock type earthquakes in the past.

Felt it pretty strongly in PN. Me and da missus were watching TV, and the TV was rocking from side to side. We could feel our whole house moving around.

I can't see any damage or new cracks. I'll have to look tomorrow.

That's the Old Government Buildings (DOC page for the Old Government Buildings), now part of Victoria University. It's also the largest wooden building in the Southern hemisphere.

That building is timber, apart from the footings, so it will probably be okay. I think it was earthquake strengthened before the law school moved in and the chimneys are all polystyrene for show, so the old fireplaces got removed.

That's exactly what it felt like here in Hamilton! Thought I was feeling dizzy, but no..

Apparently that damage is the Parliamentary Library in teh parliment grounds, which I believe is apparently is on some form of Earthquake base isolation system. http://www.parliament.nz/en-nz/about-parliament/history-buildings/buildings/

When the earthquake struck, my father, half-brother and sister, and I happened to be in a restaurant carpark, not moving, and we were wondering why the car was swaying side to side. I looked outside and saw the bushes/light posts also sway.

Came home and a few things had fallen off, and cupboards had opened - but no damage.

Praying for no more earthquakes of that size and greater - or no more earthquakes at all! The one at 7.30am this morning was enough for me. (Funnily enough I didn't feel the 7.17am one, which was stronger. Strange.)
