Hoping my kids there are sleeping through the quakes right now. They wanted to move here when I skyped them today. :-(

Back to the main question, I think it would vary a lot depending on a lot of factors (Location, strength, depth etc) of the quake.
It could cause issues with flights, inter-island water travel, power, phone/internet, maybe even the government may be in difficulty as a result.

I remember seeing a sort of mini-series on TV a while ago about just this, big quake hits Wellington and shows what happened after, and I think they ended up moving government to Auckland instead of rebuilding in there. I highly doubt that would ever happen, mixing the Business Capital and Political Capital would only cause more issues and drama.

If all else fails of course, we all abandon ship and move to Aussie.

Snappy, Sam? Not in any way at all.

Ask those affected who have no power, sanitation, and the food outlets are out of bread, water, and other needs. Add to that that this sequence is abnormal, it is not following the 7.0, then 1 x 6.0, then 10 x 5.0 etc,etc.

Since we're on a forum, I think this is more than the right place to discuss what OP mentioned.

Just because he's not asking how the people of Wellington are, doesn't mean he's not concerned/worried/bothered by what happened.
For all we know, he could be greatly terrified by such an event and this is his way of distracting himself from whats happened or coping with the stress, we don't know. But he posted a question, with no ill intent.

Do you know what it is like to take 5 hours to drive 4 km home?
To see cars reversing down bridges that are blocked by cars escaping, and the light towers quivering like tussock needles in a high wind?
To get home to find your children in tears after seeing the coverage on TV hours earlier?
To go into your workplace building 3 months later to recover staff personal belongings and to read tearful texts from your kids on your phone once you charged it?

I suspect not.

Blowing it out of proportion? Ask those in Welly or Marlborough if they take it in their stride knowing it's no biggie? Or a previous poster whose kids were terrified. Not blowing it out of proportion Sam, no. This is life in an EQ country, no need to blow off those who show concern, and who knows how those in the thick of it feel. How do you think they will sleep tonight??? In terms of the OP, internet is not the high concern.

Disappointing that the comments of a few are so negative, particularly as I have enjoyed their past commentary here. I am sure most if us are concerned. Not what has happened, but moreover the uncertainty of coming days.

Get water, bread, milk if you can in the morning, just in case.

The OP asked a question about what WOULD happen. OP is curious, it's human nature.
You're going around acting like we don't care about this stuff, but I do. I have half of my family living in Christchurch, I know how stressful it is when you can't contact them for days, freaking out not knowing what the hell is going on. We all were impacted by the Chch quake in some way.

Just because we didn't happen to be in Wellington during this event, you say we can't dare discuss this at all, even something hypothetical? I fail to see how this is directly affects you, because quite frankly, you ARE blowing it out of proportion.

And btw, OP stated this wasn't a concern, but curiosity. (4th reply from the top, check it out)

B, I am not the only one taking exception to some comments on this thread.
C, There is little real comment on the OPs query, not surprising given the potential gravity of what may occur in coming days.
D, I suggest to ask MF transfer non How will my internet be, to the other thread

In terms of the OP's query, who knows? No one has contributed anything remotely relating to that. Locally, power will be out, expect that to be resolved in 1 to 4 days for most. Internet, if working in some area will be poor due to congestion, cell calls will be poor, use text to reduce congestion.

If the worst happened, Alpine Fault, that can affect from Fiordland to east of Wellington (sea). Only one part of that fault will go off, over time other parts will follow.

AKL? Not a big issue internet wise I feel. The OP should not worry

I was wondering about the likes of the HVDC power cable in the strait as well if the ground moved say a good meter. However in saying that, if it moved that much I'd be more worried about coastal towns from the water.

I would imagine that there's reserve power at say coal fired plants up north that would be brought on line.

There's also load shedding or switching where they can switch power on/off in different areas to provide essentials with a more stable supply. If it happened in the middle of the night, they could trip hot water/night store heating via ripple to shed load etc...

For comms, well I'd imagine only satellite or microwave would be the backup until any damage was repaired on fibre submarine cables.

You raised some interesting questions OP.

I should have added: Load shedding in Auckland etc... if the quake disrupted the HVDC.

Comms, well it all comes in out of the country up there.

The microwave/satellite - I meant for the likes of me at the bottom of the South Island to communicate with the North Island.
