I dunno about you guys but when I was little, I said all kinds of 'nasty' words. I thought it was a great joke, because I could make some people go beserk just by saying keywords. Only some people though.

I realised it adults who say naughty words don't mind hearing naughty words.

I eventually worked out that naughty words are only naught because people say they are naughty.

After doing the 'why?' ...'just because' '....why?' 'just because' thing with various adults, I came to realise that there really is no reason for words to be naughty. Just alot of predudice amongst grown-ups.

Remember that many people have differing views of what is acceptable, what isn't and what is borderline.

Personally, I'm not a fan of swearing/cursing (though i had no problem with the TV article on TV3 or with movies with excessive swearing). Cursing or swearing at someone on the phone who is trying to restore your service gets nowhere (if they aren't moving as quickly as you'd like, this is not done on purpose), in fact in many cases - they will [justifiably] hang up on you.

Anyway, a prime example is the hell advertising with references to children being devils or something and also the infamous condom advertising - both of which led to people complaining to the ASA. What rocks your boat, doesn't rock everyone elses (particularly true for religion).

What about on the sports news.. Yeah the game was F.. good.. we did F... well. I heard that so many times while watching the sports news. Especially on Rugby. Not even a beep. I had an oversea student staying with us, she thought she could say that at school because it's said on TV.

Why beep others but not sportmen???

I assume that this was a quote from a player who just finished a game.
Sports reporters now rush up to players as soon as the whislte goes and before theplayer has even left the field.
The sportsman is still in the heat of battle mode.
Perhaps you haven't played a full contact sport before and therefore you can't understand how that is different to other settings. However for most of us it is no surpirse to get colourful language in that situation. If it is not live - I don't know why they don't beep it out. I perhaps since it is a quote, they are not technically required to.

I wasn't surprise when the live is end, but when it's replayed later in the day... doesn't seem to have any beep. Perhaps, using the F word in sports is acceptable?

I did play soccer and basketball when I was younger.. working with a bunch of blokes I do say lot of F without realizing...

It sure does feel good when yelling it out! But I don't understand media... really

By the way, here is one, I think it's good, cartoon to go with this topic

hello

after reading this post and some of the replie's to the actual post, i just had to post, and make my comment, and it is that in this life of such political correctness, it is again the minority rather than the majority that is spoiling it all for the remainder of us?

i f i see something on any telly, that i find offensive/nasty/ inappropraite, the easy solution is to change channel EASY AS 123???

have we really got time, to just sit down and wit for the poeple on the box to say som ething out of order, just so we can complain??? GET A GRIP OF IT

Some random, incoherent thoughts ...

I'm a Christian and what I find offensive are things that demean human beings, such as TV shows or adverts that suggest that people (men and women alike) are just sex objects. I don't find it offensive because I am narrow minded, but because there are huge downsides to our society's obsession with sex, such as unwanted pregnancy, VD, emotional instabilitiy, children growing up without a stable family, etc. I'm not judgmental of people with complex love lives -- just puzzled as to why they put themselves through the emotional turmoil that always seems to result. I would also be a hypocrite if I claimed that I was pure and spotless in this area.

There is so much more to life than the shallow, stereotyped lives portrayed on much of TV drama. I would have to say that my life was considerably greyer before my conversion to Christ than after. Jesus offers life 'in all its fullness' and liberation from from sin and guilt.

I am not particularly offended by swearing. I am an adult and I don't need to be protected.

I am very offended by most advertising because it is full of lies: buy this and you will be a better/sexier/healthier person. Christians believe that every human being is made in the image of God and each person therefore should be treated with respect and dignity, whoever they are. Advertising treats them as mindless 'consumers'.

All ads are Tui ads, in my experience ... "Ribena has lots of Vitamin C".

Some Christians jump up and down and scream because they are offended by this, that and the other, but they just give Christianity, and more importantly, Jesus Christ, a bad image.

On the other hand, many of the things that Christians say offend the Politically Correct, and the PC brigade want to stop Christians saying certain things. Then it's the PC crowd who are jumping up and down and screaming.

I grew up in a very politically active family and one thing that was impressed on me was the main principle of a liberal democracy:

"I don't agree with what you say but I will fight to the death for your right to say it."

This is a principle that both PC types AND over-zealous Christians often forget.

As for TV showing things I don't like, well, I always have the choice not to watch, or not let my children watch. I also have the choice to let them watch things and draw their own conclusions as and when they are old enough to form opinions and not just be sucked in by what they see.

The problem is that somebody's view is going to get imposed. It's just that if you happen to agree with the view that is imposed, to the level that it seems blatantly obvious to you, then you just don't notice that this view is being imposed.

The reality is that all policies, whether governmenal, commercial, or even those of geekzone, are imposed on others, because any organisation needs consistency in order to function.

Many Christians feel that too many secular views are imposed on them.

Everyone has to live with the consequences of imposed views that we think are wrong -- whether it's a tax payer thinking he pays too much tax because there are too many 'scroungers', or someone who's lost their benefit because they're the victim of a government who thinks there are too many scroungers.

If you've never visited Worthing, count yourself lucky! In fact, if you were thinking of going there, don't.

Go to Brighton instead.

Worthing's a sour mix of old people's homes and boy racers.

The only *good* thing Worthing has going for it is its electronic junk shop.

But back to Yorkshire. I know a guy in Leeds. His name's Edmund -- can't remember his last name. Do you know him?
