Wellington Free Ambulance and Westpac Chopper, as with others I support these having (unfortunately) experienced the great work they do when I had the misfortune to break my neck last year

gehenna: I'll also be donating to Hospice from now on given the care they recently gave to my dad.

This seemed to be the primary motivator for people giving to the Hospice when I collected for them. BTW - for those who are not sure, as far as I am aware, all street collectors for all hospices are volunteers. I'm sure this is also the same for the majority of charities.

kiwitrc: After losing a mate to melanoma, we consolidated all the donations our company did to a myriad of charities and now give one decent cheque each year to Malaghan Institute who do cancer and other disease research.

Nice one - I forgot about Malaghan because I haven't given to them for a few years. Time to change that!

In general (according to my wife who used to work at the Soup Kitchen in Wellington) most people donate to causes involving children, animals, or natural disasters.

Therefore I assume that's covered and usually put my money elsewhere. I contribute to DCM in Wellington, because I personally know people at the bottom of the heap who rely on their services. I also contribute to friends of mine who are community workers in a slum in the Philippines.

Many will support causes for problems that are caused by some adult humans, such as animal neglect. I think some of the things that some charities cover, should be tax payer funded as some are verging on core services, rather than them having to beg for money. I am a firm believer in paying tax to cover these things.

I'm a firm believer in paying tax to cover those things. I'm also a firm believer that they need doing even if the government of the day is too shortsighted to fund them. I donate, and vote, accordingly.

I Volunteer about 300 Hours a year to St John.
Plus I also to a bunch of work for Discovery Foundation - Does Personal Growth Workshops for Teenagers

The Council of Social Services may be able to help you.

The Salvation Army is a good place to start for drug and prison rehabilitation projects that also provide accommodation or housing.

In Wellington, DCM (mentioned already, used to be Downtown Community Ministries) is a good place to contact re homelessness.

Habitat for Humanity build homes using volunteers and they always need funds.

It seems that it is hard to get funding for that sort of comprehensive stuff so you should have little trouble finding very grateful charities with projects that don't fit nicely into other state funding formulas. Quite possibly that is why Barnardos in Lower Hutt have recently pulled back from Great Start Taita, one of their community-based initiatives.

More of these projects are being linked to schools because many communities are so fragmented that schools are the primary hub. There was an article that referred to this in the Dominion-Post last month but I can't find it. But here's another one on a Community Unity Project.

Personally a sucker for street collectors if it's a cause I believe it.

Work seem to be more into supporting the arts, Fortune Theater here in Dunedin etc.
