CutCutCut: There is some great looking lego on their website, but the postage is phenomenally high. It doesn't seem very clear what is availble for NZ though, is everything available/.

You either get stung by high postage, or if you buy enough, you get free postage but then you get stung by duty and GST which would be over $100 on a $300 order. I think most things are available to NZ, but I found it cheaper to buy from fishpond, who also sell a lot of it.

Have been wanting to get into collecting and building it for ages.

Once I've finished up grading the HT I will be looking for another hobby, this is the likely one.

No, It all goes up the vacuum cleaner or down the central heating ducts.

i contacted a few nz lego collectors and it seems that no one lately has been done for duty from buying from lego.com

some thinks that lego.com uses lego NZ as a forwarder, so any duties gets paid by lego nz first

I was given the big technic cargo plane for xmas and since then i have bought the fighter jet and just started doing 42009 the crane MKII. I just can't believe how people come up with these designs and make it work, pretty amazing.

I've thought about asking on here at Geekzone about swapping (and swapping back) sets so we all get a chance to build other items without paying the big bucks.

I'm looking at selling the crane after i have made it up including the 'B' model and also some 'C' models. If anyone is keen, keep in touch, all i'm looking for is getting the same amount i paid for it to get it into the country which is significantly cheaper than what i've seen here in NZ.

Went to this also. Huge lineup of Lego across many genres. My boys had great conversations with the exhibitors, who were happy to engage with them. Even managed to find a couple of Classic Space sets from my childhood :)

Youngest was hooked on the Great Ball Contraption - http://www.brickwiki.info/wiki/Great_ball_contraption - so I may have to invest in some motors.

I attempted to go to the Chch LUG a few years ago but when I saw the 300m line to get in that was mostly children aged between 3-10 I gave up and went home.

Auckland had staged entry this year, and sold admittance in hourly sections. There was no time limit, but the downside was once you were in, you couldn't re-enter, and all of the food was outside. We were there three hours, and would have stayed longer had food been available, as there was so much detail to look at in the displays. 1-2 hours would have been plenty for smaller kids though.
