timmmay: Grew up there, visit occasionally. Hole with fibre is probably an ok description, lots of poor people, but it'd depend on who you know as there are some professionals there. I wouldn't want to live there though. I've never found great places to eat, but there are some ok ones. Cheaper to live there though, but if you lose your current job you'd have trouble finding another, especially in tech.

My current job is very secure, and they obviously care enough about keeping me to let me work remotely.  I've had my current job for four years so far, through some pretty explosive growth.

The French Cafe on the intersection of Alma Rd and Carlton Ave is awesome, easily as good as anything in Wellington, and will be within walking distance of my house.  Pity I'm supposed to be on a low-to-no sugar diet...

I'm not scared of poor people, I used to do voluntary community work with people in council flats here.

Ah good to know about the cafe, I'll be back this weekend to take Mum out for lunch for her birthday. Though the only reference I can find to it says it's a bakery? We often go to Springvale cafe, good food and decent portions. Any other tips for good places to eat?

I've only had small sweet things and coffee there at the French cafe, so you might want to check if they will sell you lunch-style food.  We often go with the inlaws to the Springvale garden centre cafe (is that the one you mean?) which is OK.  I haven't yet had the chance to go on the hunt for other places to eat...

Yeah the garden center, nice omelette. I'm vegetarian which isn't really compatible with Wanganui. Found any good restaurants?

Skylinegodzilla: Just wondering if there is anyone else here from Wanganui?

I saw that headline and I thought it was the opening line from a joke, to be followed by holding up one hand and saying "Gimme 6!"!

I don't know where any of the places you guys are talking about are. I haven't lived there in 20 years.

Mosston/Rutherford/Wanganui High.

I was in Whanganui before. I am hoping to settle there permanently in the future! Nice little town, friendly people, quiet, great place for kids.

deadlyllama: I wish I was there because I am interested with the idea of developing community wifi network.

Nothing wrong with Wanganui, have been here for years and wouldn't want to live anywhere else..... up the knockers! We have one of the most temperate climates in the country here and so much at our doorstep.
As for Cafes, try Pukekos Nest just out of town on SH3 to New Plymouth, awesome coffee and food, great rural atmosphere just be aware that lunchtime during the weekends in particular is usually packed out.

Mosston started approx 1982, so rutherford 1988 and WHS 1990. Though I may be a year out.

Oggies had a website according to dineout... but no longer. Not worth the trip to work out if they offer something I'd eat. Typical of Wanganui and the businesses, very short sighted.
