networkn: Sadly as time wears on it would seem that our greatest people are passing on and without others of the same calibre to replace them.

It is relative though, because the heros of today will replace those of the past for the younger generation.

I remember when he was here in NZ, it must have been 20 years ago now. Time flies. Amazing that he lived until 95, I think that is an achievement in itself, considering he spent 50 years odd in prison.

Probably felt like 50 though, as I am sure it wasn't easy :)

Zeon: I think a lot of people gloss over his earlier days.. Remember the bombings, people killed etc.?

Plus the tens of thousands that struggled for freedom throughout history in many locations throughout the world.

Pity though that South Africa did not get its freedom in the end. Mandela fought for an equal South Africa not reversed apartheid.

The only real freedom in my mind was the first few years after apartheid ended. The years when Mandela was president.

Attitudes cannot be legislated.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Ultimately history gets written by those that win the war.

History is written by those with hindsight, it is created by those who participate, read by those who are interested and heeded by those who care.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I wasn't going to be first to say that!

It is a shame that all the people I know from there (including a former deputy ambassador to France) tell me it is no better - and in many ways worse - than it was.

I suppose this is all going to get tediously Princess Diana-ish now.
