tchart: Im currently running GetDataBack on the formatted disk and its finding files (still scanning so I dont know what shape they are in ie file names retained etc)

If it's finding file entries, that's a positive sign that stuff hasn't been overwritten.

You sir are a freaking genius! I'm recovering the files I deleted off the laptop as we speak.

The formatted backup drive however is still having some issues. GetDataBack found lots of files but the "recovery tree" dialog doesn't show anything. I may have used the wrong version of the tool though (there are FAT and NTFS versions). I am going to try the TestDisk utility mentioned in this thread too.

Wow, +1 for this. Recovering files as we speak. Much faster than GetDataBack (which scanned for over 4 hours). TestDisk started writing files to another disk after a few minutes!

Folder and file names and munged but hey I cant complain as its better than losing everything!

I have had good success with Glary UnDelete the few times I have deleted a file and then had the 'oh noes' moment. However it was on a disk that wasn't being written to, recovery was immediate and the disk had not been formatted.

I shall look into Test Disk since you have had good luck with
