robjg63: They could get you to say something else into the breath tester I guess - but the hope is that you should know your own name and address.

These have been around for many, many years....

Exactly, imagine how long the line of cars would be if they just said "Say something"

Virgil: It sounds very much like a breath testing check point. The device is an alcohol "sniffer", that can detect the presence of alcohol and a rough estimate of the quantity, that will suggest to the officer whether a formal breathalyzer test should be done.

Note that you don't have to use your real name, Kermit the Frog from Sesame street worked well for me :-)

Thanks, in forty years of driving in at least 12 countries, that's my first test and the only testers that I have seen on the news have been the ones that they stick in your mouth.

That's for the secondary test. The primary is always talk into the machine. Usually they show you the no alcohol result too, and there are sings around that say "Checkpoint"

You could always ask the cop their clearance rate for burglarys or voilent crime instead of giving your name :)

I was stopped on boxing day. The policeman had a smiley disposition when he asked me to count to 10 ,so.... I asked him if this was some sort of recruitment drive.

ahmad:The other trick I have seen the police use is to get you to count to 10. I guess that helps them improve voice ID recognition.

That question is a IQ test

Or more likely a sobriety test. Slurred speech, cant remember your name and address clearly enough to say it.

They ask for that as you are required to give it to a police officer when requested by law.

If they ask you to count you are under no obligation to say anything, same as if they ask if you have been drinking etc.

You have to be really really pissed for the speak your name test to go off. Or else have some dumb woman in the car that has just covered themselves with stinkey cheap perfume. And you can guarentee that when you are pulled over doing the blow thru test someone you know will drive thru the same checkpoint and see you.

are they allowed to stop cars randomly (not at a roadside checkpoints), without food reason now ?

a friend was lawfully driving along when he was pulled over by a marked cop car and asked to say his name etc.

thin edge of the police state ?

Yes, random breath testing is a thing.

I was pulled over a few weeks ago... police officer explained I had been "going a bit fast" (I wasn't) .. anyway I was then asked to count to ten for the machine, then got to blow into a tube.  They gave me the tube to keep, because he said it contained my saliva.  I imagine if their intent was to create a database of everyone's DNA, they would instead keep the spittle tube :)  Then he thanked me for "responsible driving"...

ahmad: The cop stuck something in your mouth? Sounds dodgy.

Sounds pretty routine for cops tbh....

I have been randomly pulled over at 2am while sober driving the Mrs home. Cop was heading the other way and did a u turn and pulled me over for a random test. It didn't bother me one bit and I thanked him for helping keep the roads safe from drunk drivers and carried on.

I don't understand while people have to be nasty or smart to cops when they are just trying to keep us all safe.

As long as you are sober, I don't think the cops mind a bit of humour.

My 2 favourites which I have used...

"these are not the droids you're looking for" with handgesture....

or say Literally "your name and address into the machine".

I've had two of these in the past few months (Apollo Drive and Ramp Road on the North Shore). The first one time I recognised it as a breath tester, and just blew into it instead of listening to the cop asking to say my name and address. Second time I said my name and address, and probably sounded drunk due to my stutter but they let me go..
