50km down would almost be at the bottom of the crust wouldn't it (or around there somewhere)?

I found in Chch that the deep ones tend to wallow a bit, its the shallow ones that give the post surprise.

Stuff has a good collection of earthquake related damage pics from around the lower NI.

We got quite a few micro cracks either open or extend around our stucco exterior walls. I was busy putting a tar like sealant over the cracks before the rain hit.

During Feb 2011 I was in my PJ's watching Pulp Sport when the EQ hit... ran and saved the TV (an older model Samsung Plasma with no Freeview) completely forgetting about the fish tank beside me... end result a flooded lounge, all the fish died and I got soaked with warm smelly fish water.... but the TV survived  Sometimes we don't always pick the right Priorities haha.

Edit: forgot the add the chimney was above the tv and landed on the roof... really didn't think that one through.

I was in the wairarapa for the day and it felt quite big. I was outside in the field, so it wasn't scary at all, as nothing could fall over. I heard it well before it hit. It is a totally different experience being outside during a larger earthquake.

Yep that's utter crap as I was there. A few stores closed like Farmers, but there was no evacuation.

I think the Manawatu Gorge will be a spooky place to drive through over the next few weeks, after shocks could well bring down some quite large rock falls.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I guess more people will think about securing TVs to walls, ornaments to shelves, bookshelves to walls, etc. We did this a few years back as Wellington's pretty quake prone. It's not particularly difficult or expensive.

On the day of the Feb 2011 quake in Christchurch, Stuff for some time were 'reporting' the airport control tower toppled. Fairfax don't publish news in New Zealand, they publish sensation and whatever gets a pageview.

I found it amusing that the people on Stuff started drawing correlations between the whales stranding on Farewell spit to the earthquakes. I mean don't get me wrong, I'm all for keeping an open mind on things, but still.

Then the number who declared that the eagle has landed...
