myusername: This is a problem I have considered.

I don't have an acceptable answer for this other than a question "What is a good ad?"

I am not against advertising, far from it. But the fact that a website will lose some revenue because I want a vastly improved browsing experience really a valid reason not to use an Adblocker?

I see 6 ads on my page at the moment. 6 ads, none of which I have any desire to click on.

Would not seeing, or simply ignoring these ads vastly improve your experience?
I have paid (finally) to become a subscriber here, not to get rid of the ads, but because I find Geekzone a valuable website that I am happy to support.

As above, would you consider paying a subscription to have a differentiated user experience?

Would you work on your startup for free?

Or let's put this in another way: you used Geekzone to advertise your business in the Startup section today, for free. But you don't think the site is worth either a contribution or whitelisting in the adblocker?

Well a good ad doesn't mislead, or bait you into clicking on it with a deal that is too good to be true. I don't see too many bad ads on geekzone. Generally NZ adverts produced by NZ comapnies are pretty good, as they are come under NZ advertising laws.

An interesting question, if only for a strange contradiction.

By not using an adblocker, the website I am viewing gets more revenue. Bonus for website, not for me.
By paying a fee (to the website I'm viewing, I assume you mean) then I don't see ads but have paid for it. Bonus for website, small bonus for me. 1 website out of hundreds (I use) doesn't have ads.
The only situation that benefits my overall experience, at no cost, is me using an adblocker. Bonus for me, no bonus for website.

If we want a win-win situation here, shouldn't a website be paying me to view their ads? ;) I'd be more happy to do that.

This doesn't really represent my actual views FYI.

That reminds me of the ISPs about 10 years ago that offered free internet, but they displayed their own adverts as payment. In a way I am surprised that there aren't ISPs that do that today, where you install the ISPs software on your computer, and the adverts that are normally displayed on website, are replaced by those adverts servers by the ISP. Although that would annoy a lot of website owners.

True a good ad wouldn't do that but that criteria doesn't immediately make a good ad either. The ad's I see on Geekzone aren't bad (offensive, overly annoying, intrusive) but they are seemingly arbitrarily placed. I don't have a car so an ad for car insurance is totally wasted on me.

I imagine a huge number of views of these ads are by people that have absolutely no concern for the product or service. So from the advertisers perspective, are they still good ads?

When I turned off my AdBlocker to have a look at the ads on this site, I didn't turn it back on, so I am viewing the ads.

A forum presents an interesting situation where more users and posts is the goal of the forum. I provide a professional service that can help people in the forum and thus it is a contribution in its own right. While I think the site is worthy of a contribution, a contribution merely to remove ads and possibly access one other little forum seems a strange offer. Is that really all you get for $25?

Is there more ways you could add value to the site? Another way to monetise apart from removing ads for a fee?

This doesn't happen as magic and it is because of the community here, not the ones that play it down:

I assume that "haters gonna hate" remark wasnt directed at me. What I am saying is far from "hatin'". Merely a discussion of advertising, isn't that why we are here?

I have no intention of spamming.

Congrats on the award.

No it's not, and if you hang around longer you will probably understand that. But you kind of have this backwards. In your case you are sounding like a comment in another thread objecting to paying a license fee for music which will be used to promote a business or otherwise earn revenue.

In this instance there is no legal framework that requires you to do so (there are not even any strict rules about business promotion) and it is entirely optional. The question you should be asking yourself is what value have you already received or do you expect to receive and how much is that worth? Probably more than $25 if your media skills are anywhere up to the task and challenge. ; ).

Here is the thing: someone joins the forums, adds a signature with links to a business venture, posts a few replies to get around the minimum number of posts we set for some subforums and then post about their new online business is all but a sign of spam coming.

We notice patterns around here and this pattern is pretty much that of a spammer. Or someone who wants to profit from a community more than participate and contribute.

when I posted the photo of the award (which we received just last week) I was trying to pass on the idea that this is a community, not simply a web site.

People will filter these things out.
