And considering that dark energy and dark matter form about 95% of the total universe, is invisible, has mass, does not emmit or absorb light, but has energy. And yet its energy affects our universe and plays a big part in its structure. Dark matter and dark energy has a gravitational effect on planets, particles, stars, and who knows what else here on earth. It holds the universe together. Yet we can't see it, but we know its there..I think its fair to say that the universe as we know and see it is not the universe we think it is. We only see and know 5% of what it really is.

The aliens may be sitting right next to us.

No it does not. Think of earth as a big particle, its not expanding.

Expansion of the universe means that new matter, planets, starts etc are being formed all the time.

Brian Cox said that one day, the expansion will cause the universe to lose life and form. Everything will be so far apart there is no heat from any stars, stars will die, and not be replaced by new events as there is just too much distance. No events as no gravity to cause events, as too much distance. Cannot recall the tuime frame, maybe 100 billion years.

Big Ban is a difficult concept. Everything in the Universe created in nanoseconds? From almost nothing to everything? What existed 2 seconds before that? If the Universe is expanding, what does the edge look like?

No it does not. Think of earth as a big particle, its not expanding.

Expansion of the universe means that new matter, planets, starts etc are being formed all the time.

Earth is not one big particle

No new matter can be formed

You are made of atoms which are made of particles that theoretical physicists cannot explain. String theorists postulate a model that explains existence of matter but only if there are at least 10 dimensions before it can remotely plausible

tdgeek: I think there is. Well by definition we are in fact life on another planet, from every other planet out there.

But the odds have to be very very low. Its not just abut being in the goldilocks zone (where water can exist in liquid, solid and gas), there has to be a decent moon, we cannot exist without the moon. There also has to be a rotating iron core as that gives us a magnetic field so we are protected from the Suns radiation. And there has to be a source of water from comets and meteorites bombarding the early planet as we had. So, a formation of a new solar system needs to put all that together for the narrow window of the goldilocks zone.

OK, I'm going to have a crack at answering this in parts.

Life, if we take that to mean an entity that can self replicate. Almost certainly. The number of stars is somewhere in the billions. The age of earth is somewhere over billions of years old. Therefore, the statistical chance of there not being a self replicating entity out there is vanishingly small.

Life as we have here on earth walking around with two legs and watching too many cat videos? Probably not. We have the form we do because of the planet we do and a whole lot of random factors that could have gone another way, I don't know how far dinosaurs were off developing something that could have lead to a sentient species but probably not far. Gives you an idea of how hard flight is when you think about that.

Will we ever see extra-terrestrial life, let alone sentient extra-terrestrial life? Hard to say.

We went to the moon in the 60's and never had a reason to continue exploring our own solar system let alone try to go outside of it, with the notable exception of Voyager. A reason may come up, you never know. And considering how fast we got from powered flight to moon landing I wouldn't count a motivated human race out of anything.

Next we have distance. To get an idea of how big space actually is try the 'If the Sun was a basketball...' you basically need a few blocks to do the solar system. So interstellar space is very big. This means getting around it is very expensive ... and would in practice require Faster Than Light Travel. This is impossible as we currently understand physics depending on who you ask but our understanding of physics has been know to change so don't count it out.

What about them turning up here? Possible but probably not an invasion force, more likely the Discovery Channel. The cost of interstellar space travel is so high the chances of an alien race turning up to earth to steal our water or gold is nonsensical, if you have interstellar space travel you have more resources than you know what to do with. What you might be is a bit bored so as we go and film 'primitive natives' they might turn up here to observe us. Turn us into slaves? More trouble than it would be worth.

They are already planning and training for a manned mission to Mars, but it may or may not actually ever happen.

Why is the balloon in a box?? If you inflate the ballooon outside in the garden, then there is no box or boundary - only iwhat is nside the balloon and what is outside the balloon, the only of difference is the material of the ballon itself.

Most theoretical physicists are rather spiritual.

Einstein doesn't believe in a god that watches over everyone but he believes in a form that has control over the forces that govern our multiverse. Not sure what he thought about creation which is a whole new dimension
