KiwiNZ: I was looking at Trustpower as they offer Power/Gas/Phone/Internet  as a one stop shop but in their T&C's their is a nasty gotcha, if you swap from Trustpower to another provider at anytime in the future a $95 per service switched exit fee applies. So if you switched all four it will cost $380 exit fees. Ouch!

The only place I can find that is in the T&Cs for a 24-month term as part of an "electricity acquisition campaign". I'm not sure whether it applies if you just sign up normally through the site, which appears to be open term.

Trustpower does seem to be the cheapest for my usage (Energy Direct doesn't offer service here) so I've been thinking about switching to them. I don't want to get stuck on a contract though!

It came up when I did the create a plan process

"Exit Fees
• If you switch broadband and or phone service providers at any time in the future, or terminate either of these services, an exit fee of $95 will be charged. This exit fee will not be charged if you only change your Double Play plan (and do not switch broadband or phone service providers), but it will be charged if you switch from Trustpower Phone and Internet at a later date.
• If you switch energy providers at any time in the future, an exit fee of $95 will be charged per service switched.
• If you switch or terminate your broadband or phone service providers and switch your power and gas provider at any time in the future, combined exit fees will be chargeable. "

and here

"PLEASE NOTE:

  • The application of the 5% discount to your energy unit charges is conditional on you continuing to purchase power services from Trustpower.
  • If you switch energy providers at any time in the future, an exit fee of $95 will be charged per service switched.
  • The application of the 5% discount to your broadband and phone services is conditional on you continuing to purchase broadband, phone, and power services from Trustpower.
  • If you switch power providers at any time in the future, the Bundle Discount will no longer apply to your broadband, phone or gas charges.
  • If you switch broadband and or phone service providers at any time in the future, or terminate either of these services, an exit fee of $95 will be charged.
  • If you switch or terminate your broadband or phone service providers and switch your power and gas provider at any time in the future, combined exit fees will be chargeable.

Never even heard of it... but no service in Whakatane so it's a bit moot for me anyway!

This is part of Trustpower's "Ongoing Agreement". In short, you are forever in contract with them and they sting you if you want to leave.

We've dealt with this a lot - most of the fibre "churn" we've seen so far has come from Trustpower customers.

EDIT: Back on topic - thumbs up for Powershop. Wife & I just moved and she did the sign-up...effortless, all done online and connected within hours.

Why would anybody who had read these terms sign up with Trustpower?
I can only assume that a lot of people don't read the small print :)

We're currently on Contact and as part of these goings on I've been looking seriously at Powershop as well. We don't have a gas line in our street (well we do but it's a main supply line so no consumer connections :-p) so gas isn't a consideration for us.

I had a look at the Genesis website a week or so back and couldn't find what their prices were going to be from early April so I used the e-form on the site to query what the prices would be. The response was to say they couldn't find my name in the customer database and to give them a call. Interestingly, the e-form had a field which asks if you are an existing customer. I put "No" and this shows quite clearly in the email trail. I think I'll give them a miss...

Budgie is company I've seen advertised on Facebook and I think I know someone who's using it, aside from that I know nothing about them. I'll have a wee nosey tonight after work. A fast look at the Budgie FAQ shows they don't do gas (so no good for the OP) and they are a division of Bosco Connect Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mighty River Power Ltd.

KiwiNZ, unfortunately I think you're going to be very limited in terms of choice with the requirements you have.

One problem is getting any certainty over time. As I have said in the other thread, I have stayed with Genesis because a few days ago they honoured an earlier price fix offer which initially looked unattractive (4.5% more than I was paying) but a few weeks later when the rises were announced it saved me around 7% against the new rates and is fixed for 2 years.

I'm not advocating fixing as an answer but if you haven't got this option I would suggest in 12 months time the figures will all be moving again and sadly probably upwards. To add to the confusion each region and usage will give different answers. Good luck with navigating the options !

I've been thinking seriously about the power company (source) called the sun and installing solar power. However the daily fixed charge for any grid power used remains the same so no savings there.

geek4me: I've been thinking seriously about the power company (source) called the sun and installing solar power. However the daily fixed charge for any grid power used remains the same so no savings there.

In the spirit of this thread, I should add that the different companies have different export rate schemes.  For example as outlined in this page Meridian offer high rates for first 150 kWhr/month then drops to lower rate whereas Contact has a medium flat rate all month.  These will change over time and hence dangerous to use for any ROI calculation.

Users on the low use plans didn't get an increase in daily rate (should have stayed at $0.33 per day) but the per kWHr rates probably rose.  When grid tied solar is added to a home then it is much more likely a user will drop into the zone where low user makes sense (less than 8000 kWhr/yr).  I suspect solar has just become more attractive if you are on low use and have seen significant rises in per kWhr rates but exact ROI (whether +ve or -ve) but answer will vary with power company.

Well I got my Price Increase letter from Energy Online.

It says your prices are increasing:

Daily charge:  .3750  New Daily Charge: .3750
Unit Charge: .2697  New unit charge: .2688

So it's not all the same.

My parents are with Energy Online too, but a different part of the country, theirs went up a few cents.

MY bill is pretty steady - $100 - $140.

Powershop does not have daily charge.

The most expensive unit I have paid for powershop is 26 cent unit.

I'm based in Tauranga

After getting a letter from Meridian explaining the new WE charges and they predicted a 4% increase in our total power bill we then got a letter a week later saying they'd made a mistake and that in the coming 12 months we will see a reduction in our power bill.

I'm with Energy Online, but have differing pricing structure - possibly because I'm rural ?

Daily charge:  .82  New Daily Charge: 1.8416
Unit Charge: .2287 New unit charge: .2019

My Daily charge has gone up over 100% ! From $24 to $55 per month, without the power usage taken into account !

Had a new smart meter installed, so I suppose they had better cover their costs .. NFSE .
