LOL....  I miss the BBS days....  was great fun, moreso as a sysop watching users trying to find the "warez" section of your filebase.... then they msg you demanding access to the warez :-p

Just took a look at the milestones and I see you've even been working on this in the future which is impressive!

  • web based logon enabled - 18/5/15
  • added Usenet Newsgroups - 16/6/15

I remember the BBS days, but mainly for downloading games. Didn't get into the social aspects or online gaming much. Still fond memories though...

Another ex-sysop here - I ran PLCBCS from 1992 to 1996.  In the last few years it had 4 nodes running on individual PCs which used a network share to access the message base and so on.  Funny going past my old houses and still seeing the bundle of extra overhead phone lines :D

I cant remember exact dates for my BBS, might be able to dig up a rough idea from the original HDD (which still works and boots via WinUAE! Unfortunately the original BBS isnt on it, but rather a re-launch I was going to do).

Do you rate limit the connection speed to 56k?

In short no...

Long answer -

The website 'login' tab uses a proxy based in the states to funnel traffic to the bbs, so this introduces quite a bit of lag. I have been playing around with running the proxy software 'locally' in NZ and this will negate a lot of the slowdown when I have it running in a stable fashion.

If you use a Telnet/ANSI friendly client like NetRunner (you can pull down a copy from the bbs.geek.nz website) or SynchTERM then connecting directly to the BBS via port 23 is far faster.

The only other '1st world' issue I have is my kids maxed out the broadband over the last school holidays so my Telecom plan will throttle back to around 56k experience until the next monthly data date rolls over... so I expect the next 7 days will be a 56k style experience anyway :-( Given the amount of data the BBS sends (ANSI graphics, FidoNet packets etc. I think it will be fine... after all it was developed in that era :-)

What user name? If you mean you just signed up at Agency BBS I need to validate you to 'Double Agent' first then you can play the games... new user security level is set quite low so validation is required first. If you use the handle you want but supply real name, email address then I'm happy to validate you. I had 1-2 users sign up with completely bogus info but have left them messages saying please state correct name and email.

Most message bases etc.. just use the handle a user signs up with, but posts to Fidonet require a real user name - their rules, not mine
