gundar: I am just about to venture into the world of online grocery shopping and wanted to know if there was a space for discussion - hints, tips, recomendations in this area? It seems hot topic in the consumer space and is somewhat related to tech and all things geek.

Probably not a new forum, it's hard to justify setting up a completely new forum when it won't have anywhere near the level of posting that the current forums have. Maybe we can re-evaluate in a few months time?

Just watch out for Countdown's trucks. One drove into my mum's garage the other day and tore off the roof. Another completely totalled a friends car the next day and wrote it off completely....and her car was parked! Both unrelated but still...

I meant new forum topic or group, like "online retail" the same way we have all the tech retailers setup?

I can't stand going to the supermarket so its been fantastic getting food delivered and cooking meals I've never cooked before.

We live semi rural and use Countdown online shopping and delivery out of Wanganui - we have made arrangements with them for access - Chilled items packed in polyboxs with sealed Ice packs (which are left for recovery on next order) - order completed one day and delivered the next (on scheduled delivery days) - have had no (limited) problems with their service

networkn: My issue is that delivery is expensive. I would think that supermarkets would incentivize you to not be onsite as it means lower staff costs, and if staff costs drop, so should overall charges for either the product or logistics. Dreaming I know.

I'm not convinced staff costs would be lower. Effort/time is required for them to pick, pack and despatch.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Yummy goodness. The quality is good, the fruit are awesome. It's about $20-25 worth of supermarket stuff for $33, better quality, friendly delivery and on time.

The box can be left out for reuse and the box includes a recipe - which happens to have most of the ingredients for.

I'll leave the subscription running for now.

We've been getting shopping delivered for 2 years... Mrs and I both work and both hate the stupidmarket. It's worth every cent of delivery. They bring it in, put it on you bench and take back all the bags from last time. The only thing we don't get is steak. We like our local butcher.

To be precise, I rather safely bought an entry level foodbox subscription, the first arrives today, it is $33/wk and promises to deliver more veg and fruit than I can eat alone - I started small to be sure it would be good value. I'm a vegetarian, so this kind of product, plus home-made bread should see me for all meals. They do offer a meat product, too.

I'm in Hamilton, will let you know how it goes if there is any interest.

I wouldn't trust them to pick my groceries if we are talking the usual suspects in terms of supermarkets. Some of the staff in our local ones are so slow it amazes me they can dress without help.

I did look at Foodbox but they persist in wanting to send vegetables and fruit and neither I nor the dog eat much of those. My wife eats more but wouldn't eat enough either so most would go to waste. Also I wouldn't pay money to have someone else decide what I should eat!! If I decide I want a kilo of fillet steak in front of the TV tonight I don't want to find that I have been selected for mushroom risotto that night...!

Did they leave the meat out deliberately? That looks dangerously green. Green is bad.

Ever thought about your local farmers market?

Costs me $20-$25 a week for a weeks supply of fruit and vegetables. (less than half of what I would pay in a supermarket and the quality/freshness is 100% better IMO)

Goes up a bit in winter mainly because of tomato prices, but winter vegetables take the place of the summer ones anyway.

No transport costs as it's only 10 minutes walk away from my home.

Weekly:
2+ KG Bananas $2-$4
2+ KG Tomatoes $3 - $7 depending on the time of year.
2+ KG Mandarins or Oranges $2 - $4
1 KG Broccoli 3 - 4 heads (last a week) $2 - $3
1 KG Beans $2 - $4
1 cabbage $1 - $2

Fortnightly:
2 KG Carrots $2 - $3
2 KG potatoes $2 - $3
1 KG Parsnips $2 - $4 depending on the time of year

Last week I read an evaluation of those food box services, I think it was in a newspaper. The conclusion was some are good value, around the same prices as a supermarket (plus or minus 10%), some are worse value, and none are significantly better. If you don't eat anything from the box it's probably worse value. However if you count convenience it's probably worthwhile for some.
