Why compete on an uneven playing field?

The main reason was explained on Radio Sport the other day. All the challengers race against each other throughout, but the defender doesn't race until the last series.

I think it's fair enough.

Not really. A lot more people are interested in Rugby, and as I recall the Government made it's money back and then some re RWC and it's associated ongoing benefits.

I am not sure how much NZ Govt provided in 2007, I'd imagine it wasn't much.

I don't know if they did make their money back, and if they did, it is very difficult to assess as there maybe ongoing benefits from it that are still occurring. They had to pay a lot to rebuild Eden park. A lot of people are also interested in the americas cup when we are close to winning it. In 1995 when we won it, it was also huge news, probably on par with when we won the world cup rugby.

Right, but Rugby happens 9 months a year, yachting 4 weeks every 4-6 years. Infrastructure was put in place which benefits Auckland ongoing.

The yachting is also ongoing too, as there a minor races all the time involving team NZ, all around the world, and NZ boat builders benefit as a result. I think they should be stumping up some of the cost, as they directly benefit. There was also a lot of infrastructure put in place on Aucklands waterfront, and possibly the waterfront wouldn't be as good as it is now if the Americas cup hadn't taken place down there.

Do hundreds of thousands of people sit around each week in NZ and watch Yachting? I don't think I've seen a single televised race other than the AC?

I have no issue with Government funding to assist amateur sport, I have a big issue with Government funding of professional sport.

I think you are looking at it wrong. How is it fair that the defender has no-one to race, no way to test themselves or benchmark performances?

I think you are looking at it wrong. How is it fair that the defender has no-one to race, no way to test themselves or benchmark performances?

So having a spare boat (whilst denying everyone else the same) somehow balances that? I don't get it TBH. It would be fairer to restructure the races so that the Challenger has more races to prepare.

My main issue is that if they can afford to pay Daulton $2M they don't need funding. He now earns 4 x that of the Prime Minister.

Doesn't seem reasonable to me.

I cant believe how many times we must go over this. John Key does not have a hard on for yacht racing. Your opinions on yacht racing dont matter. The amount of people that watch it, doesnt matter.

This event with a TNZ boat makes the government money (that means profit). If the government doesnt spend this, they will have less money. This isnt a debate, this isnt an assumption, this isnt wishful thinking- this is FACT. All of your arguments are political, or emotional. The government decision is financial!

Now if you want to keep arguing that it shouldnt, please argue the financial impact of the AC!

I have to say I agree, in some circumstances private funding is more appropriate.

The sport in the states attracts huge private funding from corporate organisations. Why do we have to spend public money for a rich mans sport, which realistically brings no money into this economy? Use the money elsewhere. Pay off deficits or I know, put it into the health sector or even...shock horror education.

Time to start looking privately boys.

This was the case LAST AC, there is no guarantee of the same result next time. I'd be very surprised if they get as much income as they did last time which as I understand it, is $2M from $36M invested.

Let's see after Dean Barkers outrageous capitulation, how many people watch next time. If they want buy in from Kiwi's they need to change the Skipper.

what's in for us the public to invest in this boat?

I think there are lots of things that are bad investments, not just the black boat. so the Dunedin stadium is owing 150 million or something, and every year the rate payers just manage to repay the interest, not touching the actual debt. I think we should just declare DCC bankrupt and rename the city

It's just ridiculous giving them funding.

The Barker's should put some of their fortune in to it! Surely the numbers they are talking are peanuts compared to what the Barker's can afford.

But on the other side, how can ANYONE compete with Oracle. Like... it's freken Oracle!!!
