PO Box numbers are absolutely (potentially) duplicated, the lower the number, the more instances of it there will be. There should be a PO Box 1 at every location. It will only be some very high numbers that are unique.

Box lobbies also have their own postcode, as do private bag locations and RD runs. In some cases an address like "Bob Bog, Invercargill 9875" might actually get it there.

If your item has a postcode, and enough other information to identify a unique address, you'll probably get the item. Post has even been known to use the phone book to track down addresses that can't be read or are incorrect.

But, that's only NZ Post. If your parcel comes via another carrier, they may do things differently.

I once had a letter arrive at my mailbox addressed to an incorrect name, a badly misspelled street, a missing city, and no postcode. NZ Post sure do go to a LOT of effort to deliver mail. (And this letter was from ASB no less!)

However it can never find Mosgiel, Mosgiel when I use the Pay to Post option and mentions that because I used a post code it will use that to determine my location

I've got a 6+ month old case with support but I suspect they have put it in the too hard basket

I can one-up here (although honestly, thats a good one, obviously goes down to bad thought process at NZ Post), had an International parcel go AWOL in the sorting centre, after a week or two I raised it with NZ Post and was told after a day "oh it's incorrectly addressed, can you please describe the package, it's contents, the addresses on the package and the correct address".

They stuck a new address label on top and sent it on it's way. Under the new address label you could see the original address label (and the data-matrix barcode was still intact too), the international shipping company actually reprinted the shipping label in NZ on NZ Post stock, in NZ Post local format and the address was 100% readable and only had one data point missing (RD #, but the postcode that links back to the RD # was there). When I tried asking/pointing it out to NZ Post, radio silence.

I once had a package from Amazon, where the address label on the parcel had a new label stuck over it by DHL during the sorting process. I was wondering why the address changed in track and trace, and when it was passed off to CourierPost I called up two days later wondering where the parcel was. They told me that it was lucky I'd called, they were about to bounce it back to Amazon as "Undeliverable" so they stuck another label over it and sent it on its way to me. When I got it, I took a look at what DHL had done. They'd stuck a white shipping label over the address, leaving only the city - "Waitakere" - visible. In effect, the parcel was simply addressed "Waitakere". No name. No address. Nothing.

So, guess what finally turned up! About 1.5 weeks ago they sent me an email saying that they are going to resend the parts, and asked if I awnted to change anything. I put in the format that @nigelj said, and it arrived. Thanks for the help guys.

Good result, I guess!!

These delays are a problem, though. There must be mountains of packages stacked up all round the world. Just don't believe planes can fly that slowly!
